Budget over/under shotguns
«
on:
December 04, 2016, 04:05:14 PM »
I've been kicking around the idea of a new grouse gun to replace the single shots I currently use. The new gun would only get out a handful of times per year so I can't justify spending a lot.
Are any of the lower priced O/U guns worth a look?
Just peeking online I've seen O/Us from Mossberg, CZ, Iver Johnson, and a few companies I've never heard of that are under $500.

Mossberg silver reserves seemed solid when I was looking a few years back. CZ makes a good side by side, no experience with the o/u though. Stoeger side by sides are low cost and work well for me.

I thought the Mossbergs might have the advantage of being made in the U.S., but it seems they're made in Turkey like the others. Guess I shouldn't be surprised.

For the once in a while shotgun I don't think you can get more iconic than the side-by-side. That is unless you go the Savage module 24/42 route. I think most of the most is the priced doubles will come from Turkey imported my a known company.

This is my once in a while Chinese knockoff stage coach gun. I think this is the perfect Joe Biden Politically correct hunting/defence shotgun.

I have a CZ Redhead 20ga over/under and I love it. I'm not much of a shotgun guy though, so I wouldn't really know the difference either way I guess. It locks up tight, points well and carries well. I still can't hit much with it, but that's my fault not the guns.

I would look for a used Beretta 686. Great shotguns, and the budget model used to be right around $1000 brand new.

Might I suggest looking for an older Stevens 311 SxS . They can be found from time to time and they won't break your bank.

Since there isn't much of grouse season left, this purchase can wait. I've hunted grouse more these last two years because the coho fishing has been so bad. I might keep an eye out for something used and look for a bargain.
And I wouldn't be opposed to a SxS.

I have a 24 in 20/22lr. I inherited it and completely refinished it, so I try to baby it. And even though it's the first gun I'd save in a house fire, I honestly don't like how it carries.
Also, it's been a very rare event for me to use the .22 on birds, so a second 20 gauge shell would be more useful.

I have the Mossberg. For the money, it's a decent gun. Not sure how it would stand up to thousands of rounds, but it works for me and the amount of use it gets.

Fish-V, I would be checking the Stoeger line of O/U shotguns. For the money they are not bad, they come with a 5 year warranty and made in South America covered by Benelli. I shoot a 30" SXS for Sporting Clays and decoying ducks. One advantage is they take Browning/Winchester Invector chokes that are easy to come by.

Another vote for Stoeger for a budget OU shottie. I had one, liked it but much happier with my Mossberg 500 pump that I upgraded to.
