Deer down....but how?
« on: December 10, 2016, 06:41:59 PM »
Found this little guy in the woods today. He's been dead since at least Thursday.
The weird thing was, there wasn't an exit or entry wound of any type. The nearest road from where he was found is roughly 1000 yards as the crow flies. In those 1000 yards there two extremely thick patches of woods, a clear cut and a creek.
Any ideas?

Just like any other living thing there are countless reasons/ causes for death.  How do you know there was no entry or exit wounds.   Small caliber and archery are hard to find after some weather and a day or two.

??Buckshot??

I talked to a guy that found a doe in his driveway.  It was no great shape and had no sign of trauma so he suspected a car hit it.  He "donated" it to one of the wolf places and they found five pieces of 00 in it when they cut it up to distribute it.

I did an extrmely thorough look over. Spent a solid 45 minutes looking and feeling all over.

Could have gotten smacked by a car and walked for a while until the internal injuries caught up with him. I have picked up road killed deer that look completely pristine but when you cut them open you see the bruising and the damage. Who knows though, it could have been so many things.

Hind quarters are still good to eat.

I found one like that years ago.  It was shot by a poacher with a .22 and ran off and died.  Couldn't see the entrance hole until I pushed on the body with my foot.  That was a mistake and one I'd never make again.  Got a geyser of stinky stuff shot out that made me gag.

Died of a broken heart.  His girl ran off with the big jerk buck that lives up on the hill.
