I suppose it's in the eye of the beholder.  I have my dads hunting knife. It's priceless to me.  50k in cash wouldn't buy it.

I hear that, here is one my grandmother used for years living/hunting in Montana. She gave me this one back in the early 70's.

Some of his stuff sells for a lot more than that.
Some look at it more like a piece of art than a functional knife.

and just exactly what makes a knife made by this guy so special?
My brother in law sells them for way more than that.  He actually gets commissioned to do knives, the buyer works with him on what they want out of the knife and he custom builds based on the outline given by the customer.

Big money in custom knife work. It takes a bunch of time as well.  The materials aren't cheap either.  Lots of exotic materials and metals go into them.

The materials, the craftsmanship, blah, blah, blah. Does it cut any better than my $140.00 Benchmade. For me even that is expensive for a knife. Maybe this will explain things for me. A $4,500.00 H&K AR platform rifle vs. $600.00 Bushmaster AR rifle. They both do the exact same thing just like knives. I will not be buying a H&K AR anytime soon and I sure as hell would NEVER pay that for a knife. In my opinion there is much more work and craftmanship in a Japanese Katana or Samuri sword than a little old belt knife.

Have you ever fired a HK 416 or even held one?

No, but it is ergonomicly the same as a bushmaster. The trigger, hammer, safety, mag release, bolt release are identical to a Bushmater. The main difference between an H&K and a Bushmaster is the H&K is a piston recoils and not gas. To me, that is not worth a $3,900.00 difference. I will admitt that anything marked H&K will be higher than the average. It's the name. Just like Harley Davidson.

Also, who would pay that kind of money for  :yike: A KNIFE?]

Alot of people would. Some people are happy with off the shelf others want one offs. Custom rifles , counter tops , vehicles , pool ques , golf clubs . Custom costs $

I've got a few Ruana's that would easily go for $1800+ tomorrow, if I put them on eBay. "Hear the Hammer"

My Dad bought this at the exchange on Adak and I would not sell it at any price.

Awesome, is it a "M" stamp knife?

You can send it into Ruana Knife Works and they will clean it up like new for you, Rudy's son-in-law (Mike) runs the place now and is a great guy to deal with.

I have one of his as well, mine is from the early 60's

It should have a "M" stamp as well.

Did you guys know Rudy made those knives out of Studebaker springs? :chuckle:

It is "M" stamped. Dad gifted it to my uncle who used it for years and gave it back in the late 80's. It was sent back and they went over it. The blood stains are from the first hunting season without Dad and I think ill leave them for now.

Yep it's m stamped, worked with an old guy while building the Amazon building in Kent that used to work for Rudy, said he probably cut the handles on my knife, he took it back for me last spring and they cleaned it up

Wouldn't matter how special it is when I'd lose it.

This.
I have some relatively valuable knives that I refuse to use for this reason. Same reason I don't buy expensive sunglasses.

I'm sure if you have more money than you can spend, a knife like this would be a cool thing to have. When I'm looking at almost a year's worth of house payments, though, a nice Schrade or Buck or my nice knife from Wazuki is all the knife I need. It's certainly a perspective thing.
