Handgun scope recommendation
« on: December 31, 2016, 04:45:49 PM »
I think I'm going ahead with a 15" 7mm-08 pistol barrel for my T/C Encore.  Wondering what scopes you guys would recommend. I'm hoping to be able to shoot 150-ish yards max and don't want a giant scope. Right off the bat I want to jump to a pistol scope, but then I see @yorketransport running rifle scopes on his gigantic pistols....so what say you? Hoping to stay in the $350-ish range so middle of the road price range.
Thanks in advance. This will be my 1st endeavor into scoped handguns.

Nuts, I just sold a Bushnell Elite 2-6x32 pistol scope that would have been perfect! Without a brake a handgun scope will work better unless you're really brave. :chuckle:

I like scopes in the 2-6x range. Bushnell, Burris and Leupold all make good handgun scopes but I've always like the Bushnell versions. The Bushnell Trophy 2-6x is about $200 new most of the time and the Elite 3200 2-6x32 is about $300. I'll poke around and see if I can find any deals on used ones for you.

I am tagging because I just got this Ruger GP100 .357 mag and was thinking of mounting a scope.

I might have a scope or two lying around too, depending on what you might be looking for. Also Encore pistol and rifle barrels.

I corrected my first post.

I have a Bushnell 2-6 Trophy also. After about a dozen shots while sitting on a Colt Anaconda .44 Mag it would not adjust. Sent in to Bushnell under warranty where they replaced the power ring, seal, and gasket. The paperwork did not say what had gone wrong with it. I never did put it back on, maybe someday, but the Anaconda shoots better without it.

I would go with a scope dedicated to handguns over a rifle scope. They have a longer eye relief than rifle scopes. If you were to go with a rifle scope look for one that would be ideal for a scout type set up, they also have the longer eye relief. Leupold makes a nice 2.5-8 handgun scope that looks like it would work well except for the price tag.

Leupold makes a 1.5-4x28 vx-ii that may be a good choice.  They market it as an intermediate eye relief rifle scope.  Having used it on both pistols and a lightweight .308 scout rifle, I think it makes a better pistol scope. 1.5x is low enough for both eyes open and 4x is adequate for most pistol hunting distances. The eyepiece is fairly long so it is not as compact as most pistol scopes. They are about $250.
