Thanks trophyhunt. As long as it doesn't become/turn stage 2 we should be good in a few months. Also you are correct not every tick has it and it's still not a common thing in (WA) unlike east coast.

I have a buddy with it down in Arkansas. Took him over a year to get over it. It is the only reason why I no longer kill every opossum I see. (They are quite delicious BTW)  they are immune to that disease and Hoover up ticks like a Kirby vacume cleaner.

Found a few on myself after some roaming around near Ellensburg yesterday.  Couldn't find any on my dog. Brushed him really well and didn't find any.    Note to self... Black dogs make it more difficult!

Pulled over 20 ticks off my dog after shed hunting saturday.

Was out near Wenatchee and have pulled at least 10 ticks off my dog and had to have another 2 removed by the vet. Crazy!!

Pulled ticks off my 2 dogs for over an hour last Saturday. I had 5 "bites" which is strange because each one felt like a bee sting. Nearly everyone says you can't feel them but I sure did.  I quickly scraped them off with my fingernail. Near cle elum.

Went to Miller Ranch the first weekend in April and came home to find two on my lab the next week, one of which was blown up like a balloon it was so full of blood. Took them off, then a couple days later took another one off the dog, which I'm pretty sure had to have come from this (the West) side. Couple days later yet, we find one in the scalp of my 7 year old - it had just attached and had no blood in it, so I doubt he brought it back from EWa. Neighbor said they took one off their dog last week, too, so they are definitely out here on the Wetside. Apparently they like the cool, wet springs - kind of like we've been having up until this week.

What's the best treatment for dogs tick prevention?

I give my WPG Nexgard. This year I found the first tick on her back in late February or early March after a walk out in Vail. The Nexgard is a monthly treatment which kills the ticks once they bite the dog. I just brush her fur really well before coming in the house and then again a couple hours later. I'll usually brush out a couple dead ticks a couple hours. My dog's just a ball of hair though, so she's just a magnet for ticks. Never found a flee on her though.

This is based on a misleading "study" where a couple opossums were put in a glass cage with 100 ticks.  The number of ticks removed by grooming was then multiplied and extrapolated out to wildly exaggerate their effectiveness.  Government waste, useless grants and fake science all rolled into one.

Opossums are known to spread Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) disease to horses.  Infection causes loss of muscle function and weakness.

They do not get a free pass around here.

They are an invasive species and need to be culled at each and every opportunity.  Just like ferrel cats.
