Carb question
« on: May 03, 2017, 04:40:25 PM »
So my lawn edger has been giving me fits.  Relatively new.  It starts up fine.  After running for about 2 minutes the carb starts acting as if the choke is pulled, and begins to pukes gas, and dies.  I noticed today that shortly after it did this I unscrewed the gas cap and air rushed in.  So I don't know where to begin to look.  I have torn the carb apart twice and cleaned it with carb cleaner.  Just cant seem to figure out if the vacuum issue is the issue, or the carb is causing the vacuum issue.  If I cant figure it out, I will check on line to try and buy a new carb and see if that fixes it.  ideas?

How does it run if you leave the cap off.
I'm not sure.

My John deer ride on our mower was dying after about 30 minutes then wouldn't start again for another 30 minutes. It ended up being a plugged vent hole in the gas cap. Just a thought, not sure if you have a vent

Really weird.  I went out pulled the cap off the tank.  Fired up and ran fine, and didn't do what it was doing before.  So I drilled a hole in the cap, and calling it good.  Only use the thing once a month.

Glad you figured it out. Had the same issue with a small outboard with built in tank. Vent was clogged on the cap.

sounds like you worked around the problem.  most small power equipment has a 1 way vent built into the gas cap, to let air in but not out.  often times they'll fail and seal up tight, so once you start drawing a vacuum in the tank the carb starves for fuel.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun
