Colorado mule deer hunting

 Has anyone on here headed to CO to mule deer hunt? Looking to head over this fall, probaly going to bow hunt. Looking for any advice u might have or units u hunted and what type of experience you had. Thanks Shane

I'll ask around here at work. There are a few guys that hunt there every other year or so. They go rifle but they might have some tips. I'll PM you if I get any info worth letting you know about.

Yes, hunting SW Colorado again this year.  It is a low deer density area, but the big deer are there.  Bring good glass.  I used my Swaro 10x50's around my neck and always brought my Swaro 15x56's (tripod mounted) and 20-60 spotter.  I was up high on a lookout before daylight every morning and every evening.   Last year was tough, but not from winter kill in our area.  Should be a good carry-over.  Be careful on unit, though.  Some units did have a severe winter kill.  I ate my tag, but saw a few deer over 180".  Seven hunters killed two deer - 180" and 197".

I want to. I have 6 deer points so far. I might wait a couple more years to figure out where to hunt.

i hunted there in 92 and 94 took a buck both times, a 3x2 the first time and a 25inch 4x4 the last time. we hunted in the durango area. my both my buddies scored too in 94 we went 3 for 3 on that hunt. with my 4x4  a 21 inch 5x5 and a 180 class 5x5. we saw tons of deer

Been 3 times now. . . Hunted northwest area, which I guess got hit pretty hard with winter kill last winter. . . Taken two 3x4s, and a two point.  Good time. At least in the area I hunt you need good weather to have a good chance for a good buck.  Colorado's game department is awesome too.

Going to pass on it this year because of the winter kill, hunting Idaho instead.

Would be great to hunt there. I haven't yet. Just so many other awesome places to hunt that are closer.

Closer? Not in WA,OR yes! even our draw units arent that good for big muleys, if you can even draw a tag in a lifetime  . CO record book entries in the last 10 years says it all. Nevada also, applying there too

CO sure does seem to have a good muley population. From my understanding, chasing record book entries is a MUCH different game than chasing the next great hunt. You hadn't mentioned anything about record book entries in your first post. That's why I said "other awesome places to hunt" and not something like "places with bigger trophy animals."

I am just pointing out that CO hasn't been a priority for me, with most of my hunting time split between WA and Montana these days. I'm not a trophy hunter but won't pass one up either. I lived and hunted in AZ for 8 years. It's pretty hard to beat as well. With neighboring NM and Sonora Mexico being other favorites with trophy hunters.

Whether it's glassing a heavy, mature blacktail mackin on huckleberries overlooking the Pacific Ocean, or glassing a big herd of mule deer in the sage brush in 5 degree weather, I'm just happy being deep amongst the critters in amazing places. Just seeing thousands of big game animals in a week only 12 hours from my door step is pretty good for me.
