Thinking of applying for a cow tag, Is there access and forest service land to hunt in this unit without purchasing a hancock permit. If I remember correctly, when I drew the white river tag there was but didn't spend or pay that much attention to that side of the unit

It's the Green River watershed owned by the city of Tacoma that you'd be hunting, and you'll be granted access if you draw the permit.

Important to note that there is no camping in the she'd.

That GMU is restricted and patrolled.  If you draw the tag, there is no scouting opportunity, and you can bring 1 person each day with you.
That's the bad news. The good news is the unit has plenty of elk in it

Trust me, you wont need to scout to fill a cow tag in the watershed. Plus the Inspectors can tell you where all the herds reside.

Not to mention that if you do down an animal, the watershed inspectors are also willing to help you get the animals out. 

I think they look forward to these hunts as much as the hunter does!

Perfect, thank you. I know about the no scouting. Didn't think I would need to. Saw elk every time I went into the white river unit. Plenty of animals in the area for sure.

To be clear, the White River unit and Green River unit are completely different. They share a border, but the access and quality, plus quantity of animals in the Green is far better.

Back in the past they let you hunt for bear and cougars in there if you got the permit does anybody know if they still do that. And if they do and for instance if my son draws the youth buck tag , and he gets to take in one person will me and him get to hunt bears and cougars or just him or neither of us thanks

Make sure to look for shed antlers while in there. There's a guy that works in there and has a world class collection of antlers.

He doesn't allow cameras in his antler room. It's legendary though.

In the past the permit holder only was allowed to take one bear and/or one cougar during the hunt. The one person allowed to go in with the permit holder can not...485 is a closed to all hunting and fishing area.  Also, no grouse or anything else even for the permit holder. The watershed guys are helpful but its their job to moniter and keep track of what your doing also for ethical hunting and your safety. Thats what I knew of the hunt unless something has changed recently....Les
