Resizing 7mm rem mag shoulder bump different length brass
« on: May 13, 2017, 08:19:33 PM »
So I set up to bump the shoulders back .002. I then realized when measuring once fired brass with hornady guage that the measurement was different by up to.009 between cases. How do I do this without adjusting my die every case? Thanks in advance.

Yeah me too this is all winchester brass.measure with hornady guage between 2.109 and 2.118 most are around 2.113 . Rifle shoots great with factory ammo. Especially the hsm with 168 bergers. I figure I must be doing something wrong.

.009 aint much.  How much less would you expect the tolerance to be?

I have been reloading .308 and 6.5x284 never had brass off by more than .002. To bump my shoulder back .002 on this brass I would be adjusting my die every other round. I went back and measured some of my other brass. Norma measures 2.119 federal 2.113 so maybe these were just different lots of winchester brass. I have about 300 brass from the last three years. I just went ahead and full length resized them and will worry about minimal bumb next time around.

It's a whole lot if it was all fired through the same chamber.

On another forum a guy was saying the brass was not done stretching to the chamber. I have about 200 winchester brass and they all came from different stores over the last 3 years. Not all l the same bullet weight either. I measured my norma brass I only have 20 but they all measure 2.119 40 federal measure 2.113. He was saying to load and fire. All of this empty brass fits and closes in my savage 116 which it was shot from. Thoughts?

.009" is a huge difference!

I'd try adjusting the die to bump back .002" from the longest average measurement and then try shooting a couple with the same charge and bullet. Re-measure those and see if you still get the same variations. Something just doesn't seem right here.

York and biggerhammer are serious gurus about this stuff. I'd love to pick those 2s brain on reloading, like I'd like to pick RadSav on archery stuff.

The best equipment in the world is useless to the idiot who doesn't understand it.
