gmu 653 white river. Does anyone have any good ideas or experience on how to hunt this unit. if selected I was thinking walk Pacific Crest Trail look for drainages and drop down the ones that look good also maybe find a way to get to good parts of the Hancock Tree Farm border? does anyone know the best way to get to Hancock reform border or if that's worthwhile? is anyone have any other good ideas on how and where to hunt this unit or does anyone know if my ideas r worth it?

Hunt the ski slopes. And don't over look Hancock land. There is a few spots I'll point you to in Hancock if you draw. Ive had the tag twice. 1st year I hunted Hancock and the ski slopes, last year I hunted public land but not the ski slopes. If I were to draw again I would go into Hancock again.

so you dont need to purchase a pass to hunt that side then ?

Yes you do. But you Hancock doesn't do an elk drawing for that tree farm. Only the Kapowsin and Eatonville farms.

It depends a lot of the weather and snow level. Hunting up by the PCT can be great unless it's snowed in.

How did you do on your 2 hunts?

Had the permit in 2014.  Hunted hard and saw about a dozen
Bulls.  Goal was a mature 6 point and I blew my 1 stock so
I had tag soup.  No regrets. Had a great time in the woods. 
Lots of elk in the crystal area.  I also like the washed out road section
Of the west fork white river drainage.  Of course if there a bunch of
Snow buck creek, huckleberry ridge are great bets.   I also had
The pass.  Wouldn't go that route again.  Plenty of elk in that unit

1st year I was pretty new to archery elk hunting. Only 3 seasons in and I don't really count my first season. Had a giant less than 10 yards and made mistakes. Multiple other encounters but again I just didn't know enough to get it all put together.

Last year I killed a 5x5 on my 5th day after passing a bigger 5x5 opening morning and was into plenty of elk. I'm glad I didn't shoot that first one even though he was bigger he was miles from my rig.

Think I would worry more about drawing the tag first, not an easy draw

I too thought it was hard to draw but after looking at the point spread by hunt category/choice it's not as hard as I thought for the muzzle bull tag.  I have 17 bull points. I figure I have about a 20% chance and that's pretty good compared to the other tags.
