New Regs Picture "Fishy"?
« on: June 13, 2017, 09:37:20 PM »
Had a buddy bring this up, figured I'd throw this out on here.  It's not about the great pic, cute kid or fun time.  It's questioning WDFW using a pic of a wild steelhead out of the water.  I realize some guys get real wound up but hope it's the case lol

Is it a wild steelhead?
Maybe it is just a kid who caught a large fish and her parents got a great picture that everyone agrees should be shared!

Great picture in my book!  Makes me smile!

Looks like a nice wild Rainbow to me.

Unless it has sea lice or you find seagoing stuff in the stomach, I would think it is next to impossible to say 100% for sure at that size just looking at a pic.  They are the same species after all.

Looks like its got a fly in its mouth, I'm guessing Yakima River rainbow. I'd like to know what makes it a steelhead specifically.

If you're walkin down the trail with that fish swingin from your stringer and bump into a warden, its a steelhead.
If a cute little girl holds it up for the cover of the regs, its a rainbow.  :chuckle:
Actually, I believe it depends on the body of water and size of the fish. Kinda like lake washington's rainbow/steelhead and kokane/sockeye rule.
The backdrop of the river and pristine tail of that fish does raise an eyebrow though. Probably why they cut it out of the cover shot.

I agree, its questionable as to what it really is. But its a great pic of a little girl having fun on the river bank! I'm fine with that.

That fish identifies as a carp... so it's fine. (Sarcasm)
