I also got lucky and drew the first season rifle tag! There is still some quality bucks in the unit! And with the above average rain this spring plenty of feed for horn growth

I drew it a few years back with the late archery and do a lot of goose hunting up there.  For you guys with the early archery tag.  It is crucial and I mean Crucial to find a buck that is not by a wheat field, sunflower field and field holding doves.  The dove hunters come out of the woodworks (me being one) and will scare that buck you have been watching deep into the sage.  Dove season opens on the 1st of September.

Oh trust me where we hunt it is not going to affect anyone hunting deer unless your one of the privileged ones that get to hunt on this farmers land and I'm about 99.9% sure no one on here does. 

I would never screw someone trying to kill a deer over a stupid dove.

Good luck. My son and I drew the permits for the early archery hunt the first year they were offered. Bring loads of water. That early archery season is way too early and hot for hunting in that area. Maybe by the end of the season it might cool down some as the season seems to be longer than it used to be. You might as well be walking around in hell. High heat and a zillion bugs. No snakes though, no rocks for them, just sand. We hunted hard but only got close enough for one shot on a small buck. I talked my son out of taking the shot. There are some big bucks in there but they can see you coming for a mile and are not very active if at all during the day. Hunt close to the crops fields and you might catch them on the move early morn or evening.

I love the early archery season and the heat.  They lay up in the shadows and give great opportunity to put on a stalk.  Late archery is noisy with frozen ground and rutted up bucks moving at mach 1 while chasing does.

Well from what I have seen in the past the deer hunting gets better when they come out of the Russians olives!

early archery you want to stay close to the water.. some solid bucks out there this year.. become friends with someone that has a boat is all i can say..
