North face tents
« on: July 01, 2017, 07:33:17 PM »
Any of you guys ever used any of the north face tents?
Specifically the stormbreak 3 looks like a good value as a 2 person tent with room for gear (or a 3rd person)

At 200$ with good reviews it seems quite reasonable.
It's also important that it's fairly light as I intend to use it during a high buck hunt so I cannot choose some 10 or 20lb tent just because it holds the family, neighbors and all of their pets  :chuckle:

Ps. Please don't  try to sell me on some 250$ or 300$ tent .
My limit is 200$ so with that in mind I will take suggestions for tents at that price or lower

Used TNF tents for years and they were top shelf 20 years ago. Since then I have seen a marked quality reduction but they are still in the top 50% but there are more cutting edge companies out there now. As far as I know their warranty is still first rate. The original VE-25 was the mountaineering standard for years, many fond memories in those tents.

A quick google look tells me it would probably be a good choice in your price range.

Haven't heard good things about NF tents. Take a look st this one. A bit above your price point but comes with the footprint.  Nemo products are a known quantity.

Considering it comes with a footprint that's indeed a good deal it appears, thanks for suggestion.

What have you heard bad about northface tents?
In my research I stumbled upon a couple particular NF agents that were not great but the stormbreak 3 has great reviews and the only lower ratings are pretty much just because it doesn't come with a footprint (of just use a tarp)

I have been running a stormbreak 2 for a couple years its a pretty solid tent for the price.  It is not a Hilleberg, and not a true four season tent so I wouldn't push it on a November hunt in the backcountry.  I will be upgrading next year mainly because 5 lbs is allot for a two man tent, but I expect to pay three to four times what I spent on the Stormbreak for the upgrade.

Don't buy north face, by supporting them you fund the fight against hunting.

I own a 20 year old northface 2p and the nemo Galaxi 2p.  Love the old NF, but the newer models are nowhere near the same quality.  The Nemo is hard to beat for $250.

Sorry, just saw your $200 limit.  My brother runs the stormbreak 1 and is happy with it so far, so I'm sure the larger stormbreak will work well for your budget.

No worries, I mainly said what I said to avoid ppl going "this tent for 500$ is amazing and well worth 2.5x as much money as you were thinking" I actually will consider the ones around 250$ you guys mention.

And good to hear about the stormbreak1.

I have been using The North Face Rock 32 since around  2010. It is an awesome tent and has done an amazing job on one night stays up through 8 night backcountry stays. It's best feature is it's toughness and how ridiculously waterproof it is. It's been snowed on, in windstorms, pouring rain, and heavy hail. It doesn't leak, no broken poles, and still not a single rip.  In 2013 we were packed in several  miles and we had 2 days of heavy pouring rain. It got so bad we woke up in the middle of the night to find our campsite had literally 3 inches of standing water up against the tent on all sides (very poor campsite placement). We sat inside all day joking about how long it would be before the water made it up to the zipper line and started pouring in. Fortunately it got close but never happened. We stayed bone dry inside with water pushing against the tent for 24+ hours. I think I paid around $210 for it and plan on buying another of the same tent when the time comes.
