« on: July 15, 2017, 12:37:49 AM »
I loaded up a bunch of 38spl. cartridges with double ended wad cutters for the revolvers, any of you guy's shoot them through your 357 magnum rifles?

I have a Ruger 77/357 rifle.

Never through a 357 Mag but I used to use them with a light load in my 358 Norma Mag and 35 Whelen for small game load and busting small vermin around the place.  They'd shoot cloverleaf sized groups at 50 yards.  Great practicing with the big game rifle all year, easy on your ears, shoulder and pocket book.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

wadcutters are generally softer lead than other lead bullets.  If you push them too fast they will lead the barrel.  Too fast is somewhere over 800 fps.    Years ago when I was learning things I pushed wadcutters at 1400 fps and wondered why I was using the whole target for groups.   Later I spent three days scrubbing that gun to get the lead out.  Lewis Lead Removers weren't invented yet.

I have a Rossi Puma 357 lever gun that I have shot a bunch of full wadcutters through with no problems and excellent accuracy.

I shot five factory Remington FMJ 38spl bullets first to make sure it was right on. Then tried the WadCutters, they would not feed in to the gun so I hand loaded five rounds. They all shot low, one was an inch low, two were about two inches low and two were about two & a half inches low.
They were Berry 148 grain double headed wad cutters, CCI primers and 3 grains of Universal powder. I'll use the rest up in the revolvers.

I'll be picking up some regular bullets and load up 357 rounds instead.
