Boating license question?
« on: July 22, 2017, 12:23:25 PM »
Im looking to up size from my ten foot john boat to something more family size friendly. If I just read therefgs right I believe you do not need to have a boating license if your boat is UNDER 16 ft AND is propelled by no bigger then a 15 HP motor? I have a 8 horse mariner and im looking for say a 12_14 foot Livingston that is nice and stable so my young boys won't tip it. Am I correct that with my motor and that size boat that i do not need to get a boating license?? Thanks for any help and info!

Exemptions
Education is not required if:

Your vessel has an engine that is under 15 hp.
You were born prior to January 1, 1955.
You hold a valid U.S. Coast Guard Marine Operator’s License.
The essense of freedom is the proper limitation of government !!!

I was hesitant at first too to upgrade, but the boaters test is more a pain in the @ss then anything else for the recreational boater/fisherman.  Couple nights at home and you can knock out the test and be done with it, well worth the safety of having a larger boat for the kiddos.

Most of the test was a no brainer and I took the free version. If you have the card, then you wouldn't worry wherever you go. Get it while it may still be free.
