Welcome to HW, Dave! If you are looking for deer, look for deer sign (track, etc...), regulary used trails to and from food, water or bedding areas, and place that new cam where you think the most activity might take place.

Since we're past the rut and most deer have dropped their antlers, I'd  suggest sticking with the active/fresh trails. Place the cam close to things like intersections and crossings where you have a chance to catch most game; pinch points, transition areas between timber and grassy areas, heavy trails. fresh beds, dead anilmals that are being eaten. Just look for places that critters are frequenting.

The predators (coyotes, bobcats, coons, etc...) and birds are always on the look out for food and cruising around. So, if you just want animal pics, be oportunistic and place your camera anywhere you see activity has/is taking place.

~ good luck!

May the morning silence be broken with the wisp of vanes trailing blades to their mark.

Just find a trail that is churned up with fresh tracks and set up with your cam aimed down the trail, but set up off to the side.  I like to shoot at about a 30 degree angle down the trail to get some shots.  Here's one for an example.  In another month you'll see more deer activity pick up.  I'm talking about lowland blacktails, by the way.

As some of you may know, my trailcam was just riped off the tree sometime yesterday. I was pretty confident it was a black bear?!!

Looks like it's time for a Bear can....I fabbed up a couple at work and I now chain them to the tree, I've had a few bears stand up and get a close up look. A friend of mine only found small pieces of his so I got to it and built the cans.

I like the Bear Can, coonhound!! does it have hinges an such? I bought a similar one from Cabela's on Saturday, but it seems kinda flimsy. Yours is probably all welded and strong right?
