Mule deer in a west open unit, legal to shoot?
« on: October 24, 2017, 06:27:13 PM »
What if I'm hunting this weekend in a unit that is open for blacktail, that boarders an eastside unit and I see a buck deer. If it's a mule deer I imagine I can't shoot it, even if the unit I'm in is open?  If it's a cross bred deer, how would I know? Or can I just shoot any big buck I see? Probably a stupid question.

I believe the answer is: anything West of the PCT is Blacktail and East is Mule.

Here is a little known fact that is along this line. Diablo unit 426 is in mule deer country on its east side, but is any buck. So one can kill a spike, or two point muley.

You could head up to Corall pass, or Crystal mountain and shoot the biggest, baddest two point mule deer up there if you want!

Where is this Corall pass you speak of?

Its just north of that ridge that runs down to the river, across the canyon from the rocky hill where that three legged spike bull was shot a few years back.

Yup any buck that is west of the crest the state considers a blacktail so you could shoot a spike or two point.
