Margaret Modern
« on: November 09, 2017, 08:42:41 PM »
Anybody been having much luck in the Margaret area? My dad and I were drawn for cow special permits, with college I've only made it down there last weekend and managed to talk my instructor into giving me yesterday on through the weekend off, so my dad and I could put in some time. From what we've seen it's been a bit light coming out of there, found a few spots with some fresh sign but haven't been able to get on them yet, trying to fill the freezer's up, haven't had any luck with deer this year yet either, hoping for a bit of magic during late buck.
How about all of you? Any tips? Last time we were hunting the area was before it opened up for general so we saw a bunch of big bulls that weren't legal with our antlerless only tags and had some choice with the cows.

There should be a lot of elk in the mudflow.  Maybe hunt the border.

Not sure the road numbers, 3549?....but the road that takes off way up the Silverlake highway, up past the big tourist viewpoint for the mud flow. There is a pretty large section of thinned second growth in there. Unfortunately the permit holders drive every single road and there is a road every 1/4 mile. But if you can get away from a road a bit in the thick stuff surrounding the large thinned sections you should find elk.
I'd imagine snow will be a factor. It will push elk down, but also limit where you can drive.

Thanks for the help everyone, went out today no luck still, but did see a good sized spike buck but one spike was real long and curved around and rode down the side of his face, so that was interesting, fog rolled in too thick to get a good pic of him though. We're gonna be hitting her real hard this weekend. Here's to getting something in the freezer this year. Will keep the thread updated and try to liven it up with some success, thanks again for all the help.
