6.5-284 Norma!!
« on: December 14, 2017, 03:36:24 PM »
So, I'm looking at and thinking about new rifles and the 6.5-284 Norma cartridge caught my attention.  It looks like a real performer in terms of ballistics but I'd like to hear some first hand experiences with it.  Anyone have one?  Thoughts on it?  Hunting stories, bullet performance, etc. to share?

Let's hear them.

Their accurate, they kill crap. I've shot my share of them. Muuuuuuh, they don't like being pushed hard. Most have a accuracy node with the 140/142's @ around 2850fps. I'll take the Creedmoor over the 6.5x284. When it comes to the 140/142gr bullet class.

I absolutely love mine. Below max load with 4831sc pushing vld or eldx at 2900. I also like my creedmoor which in the end will have much better barrel life but for some reason I prefer the long action 6.5x284 . Very easy to load for with retumbo to hit 3000 plus unfortunately at the time retumbo was scarce and only ended up with 1lb and 10lb of 4831. 24 inch barrel or better recommended. Killed my hi buck at 476 yards bang flop. My creed I'm shooting at 2700 fps but it only has a 20 inch barrel rl17 thanks biggerhammer. Can't go wrong in the 6.5 family. I'd take one of each 260 rem, 6.5x47,6.5-06,6.5x284,6.5 creed, 6.5saum please santa

A good buddy has a 30" tube on his custom.  He's pushing the 140's at 3100fps.  Watched him bang flop a 330" bull at 980 yards in Colorado this year.  Darn fun gun to shoot too!

Hmmmmmm. If I had a 30" tube on a long action. It sure wouldn't be a 6.5-.284.👍

I probably hotrod my 6.5-284 harder than any other rifle I own.  In fact it's at Defensive Edge right now because I'm having Shawn do his +P throat design to it to see if I can squeeze another 100 fps out of it.

I'm a big fan of wildcats based off the 284 case, with the 6-284 and 6.5-284 being my favorites.

Well I gotta ask then, what would it be?  I love talking rifles/cartridges/ballistics, etc.

Here you go, take your pick when it comes to chamberings.

http://pac-nor.com/wildcat/

PAC-NOR out of Oregon makes some great barrels. Good enough that almost all Noveske AR15 and AR10 barrels are spun from Pac-Nor blanks. I have had them barrel
Rifles for me in .308 Baer, 6.5-.257 Weatherby, 6.5 Gibbs, 6.5-7x57, 6.5 BR. Three month or less on the turn around time and they flat shoot. Reasonably priced, they know their good so you don't get the chest beating, I'm the premier rifle builder of the northwest with a old lathe in the corner of the garage with a 5K price tag.

I know how long it takes to spin up a rig and I know what components cost at cost. Most people are totally getting screwed.

I would want more than 900 ft lbs on a 330 bull. Those 330’s are double the toughness/size of a raghorn but Hey it got the job done.  High shoulder?  Like broz says its only the errant shots where the bigger guns shine.

according to my calculator he had 1300+ ft lbs... it’s very important to use actual environmental data when trying to prove a point

In the real estate world they say it's all about location, location, location.  Well, I'd say, in the shooting world it's the same way but instead of location it's all about shot placement, shot placement, shot placement.

behind the shoulder.  Conditions were good, and the shooter was more than capable.  Regardless of the number, the result was an impressively dead bull

point is inless your shooting moose past 1000 yards you will love the 6.5x284. less powder to burn and recoil is mild. the 140s are slick  .
