Best wood pellets for traeger
« on: March 24, 2018, 09:21:09 AM »
Found a few threads that talk a little about this but they were all pretty old. Bought a traeger a little while back and been having some delicious fun figuring it out. I'm almost done with the couple of bags of pellets I bought with it and was curious what other brands of pellets anyone else was using or not using. Thanks.

I’m interested in what people have to say as well. I have probably put roughly 50 bags through mine I have always used traeger pellets. My buddy bought one the same time I did and he has had a bunch of problems with his. He has never used traeger pellets in his. From what I have heard it’s because the other pellet manufacturers can have some of the pellets come out a little longer and the auger needs to break the pellet to get it to feed and in his case has tore up 2 sets of gears.

I bought some from the Bulk Buy Pellet sale on here.  They have been really good with little dust in the bags, unlike the Traeger pellets that were a quarter dust.

Found it:

I have had the best luck with bear mountain smoker pellets.
I find them at Cash And Carry.
They burn clean and are reasonably priced.

Rest assured folks, regardless of what decals Traeger puts on their grills, changing pellet brands will not void your warranty.  They use it as a scare tactic as most people will not question it.  In fact it is technically illegal for them to be saying that per the Magnuson-Moss Warranty act of 1975.  No Mfg can require a specific brand of product be used to maintain your warranty.  If his grill broke gears it may have been bad gears or a coincidence, as even with shorter pellets the auger will have to break pellets at times.  Some brands will use smaller diameter pellets to help the augers break them up as well.  Most of my customers are Traeger owners and I have not had anyone come back to me saying they broke an auger in over 30tons of pellets sold.

As for pellets, The local brand pellets, including Traeger are traditionally around 70% alder with the remaining 30% being the flavor wood on the label.  They will say 100% Hardwood on them, that is a clue that they are not just the flavor wood.  There are other brands out there like BBQ Delight, CookinPellets, Lumberjack that make pure flavor wood pellets.  They will usually say 100%Hickory, or 100% Cherry on them which tells you they are that wood only.

I will vouch for Larry as well.  Great guy and a great product at an almost unbelievable price compared to other pellets.  I don't have a Traeger (yet), but all of my smokers love those pellets.  And I like having 3 or 4 different types around.
