Turkey Hunting with Muzzleloader
«
on:

I've been muzzleloader hunting most of my life and turkey hunting the last few years but never with a muzzleloader. Without diving into Google blindly doing research, what type of tools/gear/shot/chokes do I need to get this done and does anyone have any tips? I think this would be a fun way to mix things up instead of going straight to killing one with a bow. I shoot a 50 cal CVA Optima V2.

This will definitely be a whole new challenge but is an absolute blast. The most popular muzzleloading shotgun on the market is the Knight TK2000. While this gun can take up to 150 grains of powder with a full load, I don't recommend much over 100 due to the excessive recoil. The TK2000 comes with a proprietary choke that works great on turkeys and is known to reach out past 50 yards, if not further depending on your powder load. My personal preference on shot is to us #4, but there can be arguments made for both #5 and #6 as well. Knight also makes shot cups and wads that sit on top of them to hold the BB's from moving. Let us know if you have any more questions about it.

I've had a few hunters with black powder guns, they loaded with #6 and we got the birds within 25 to 30 yards and filled tags! It was fun just being involved.
