UTV VS A COMPACT TRUCK?
« on: May 02, 2018, 08:39:21 AM »
There are hardly any used UTV's available. This makes finding a fair price difficult. New out the door prices, depending on the model your looking at 10-20k.

For this price I would think buying a 4x4 Nissan or Toyota would get you further? Anyone disagree with this? Im looking at the UTV for hunting rig use. I understand buying the sporty versions for strictly ORV play.

Truck
More comfortable
Don't have to trailer
More street legality
More Storage.

UTV
Smaller
Cheaper to operate

Do you think more used UTV's will start becoming available?

100% TRUCK.  If its for roads and travel.  Now if for trails and such for access or some play or farm use then UTV.  I own both so trust me truck is much better especially winter time for gravel roads.  Maintenance will be on utv as well.  Wa doesn't allow much utv special access so not much use there.  Idaho and other states are much more usefull for utvs.

I would think for Washington something like a geo tracker Suzuki sidekick if I wanted something small and nimble. A couple guys at the club have them and love them. You should be able to pick up a stock one for under 5K most anytime, and a bunch cheaper if you keep an eye on CL. Lots of easy cheap improvements for mild lift bumpers etc.

There are places where you can drive UTV  around like a car but I'm not sure how useful they are in Washington on public ground...

I was thinking that would work for me until I tried to drive one. I'm 6'2" and I couldn't get my knee under the dash to close the door. The newer chevy trackers have more leg room as well as the samurai. I'm thinking myself of getting a 4 wheeler or tw200 since I don't have 4x in my ford  ranger.

Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.  Gen. 27:3

My hunting buddy with the grey sidekick is 6'2" worst comes to worst you could move the bracket back. We hunted out of it with 2 wire hairs and my chests for a weekend bird hunting.

I own a Cherokee because I have 2 kids, but if i didn't I'd own one of these.

Our Silver Arrow Bowmen Club president bought the green one for $1200. For very reasonable he has turned it into a very capable hunting/commuting rig. His is a stick. My hunting buddy has an auto. If it was only a hunting rig not a wheeler I'd go a stick small lift, and 30x9.50r15 tires.  Build it up with good bumpers, a hard top, a harbor freight winch, chains and rock the hell out of it.

One of our club members goes to AZ every winter and loves his utv.  Some scenarios make them a good idea. If your a WA boy like me I'd stick to what all the locals are wheeling...  AND I wouldn't telegraph that it was a hunting rig. No NRA or hunting stickers.

Each has it’s place, it depends mainly on your hunting style and area. The Tracker style rig has its place and is great for many applications, but for knee deep, firm snow and steep or narrow roads most UTVs will out class them hands down. I have had a RZR on a road pulling a trailer loaded with a motorcycle with no issues that would stop all but the most capable 4-wheel rig. If you are on moderately rough roads and most regular FS roads the Tracker is plenty capable and comfortable, plus no tow back n forth. Probably 90% of folks would be fine with the Tracker 90% of the time. Vehicles are not built as resiliantly as most UTVs so there is that to consider, you can break a UTV, but are more likely to have mechanical issues with a vehicle in my experience. Fuel economy is another consideration, not many vehicles can come near a UTV in that respect.
