Side by Side or Jeep
« on: May 07, 2018, 10:20:00 AM »
My huntin buddy and I are facing the fact that being in our mid 60's is having an impact on how much ground pounding we can do anymore. We are trying to decide on a UTV or a jeep. I am leaning towards a jeep as it can be flat towed behind my truck camper setup. But a UTV actually has more room if you get the 4 seater. You can buy a nice mid 2000 wrangler for the price of a new Pioneer that I looked at. Anybody out there hunt out of jeeps anymore?

My jeep YJ has taken me wherever I've needed to go hunting and fishing since 1993. Been in some pretty hairy spots before, and I am still here.

Love my 98' TJ, set it up with a tow bar and winch and it'll go anywhere a side by side will. But it also has heat, a radio, a CB and you can drive it on the highway. May be selling it due to the fact I pack in mostly now. Let me know if you decide to buy a jeep....

For the size and cost of them, I think I'd go with a jeep.

Well that settles it. I really want a jeep anyway. I bought my first one, a CJ 5 right out of high school and had to sell it cause I lost my job. Have wanted one ever since so I am on the hunt for spring bear in unit 105 and a jeep as soon as I can find the right one. Would like to find one of those LJ's. 10 inch longer wheelbase and more interior room. Ok, thanks everyone for your input.

Jeepster Commando sitting in my shop.  Have run across the fellas on the 4 wheelers and they have asked me. What is that?
I tell them it's the original 4 wheeler and while they are shivering  I have a heater and wiper's.   :chuckle: :chuckle:

Get 1 of each.    Problem solved.

We have a CanAm SxS, we call it MJ (Mini Jeep) and a TJ Wrangler, both have their place for use, but the SxS is much more fun.

They are Indian, and have had the production rights from Jeep since ww2. I haven't seen a break down but many of the parts are the same as a CJ5 which would mean most of the aftermarket parts should work as well.

Having ran quads both sport and 4x4 and utvs and of course vehicles I see it this way.  In a quad you can do it all from fun to work to go all places.  Jeep/trucks etc are slow, comfortable, thirsty and getting stuck or breaking is always a concern. Plus you need to drive em or a big trlr.  Utv is fun, go almost anywhere, far more than a jeep can think about.  Cheaper imop.  Less risk of breaking or stuck.  Not comfy unless you upgrade then ya sure.  Not tiring like quad riding.  Can transport gear and passengers -2up-4up. Versatile.  UTV needs some tools, a belt and a tire fix with spare gas and you good to go.  Less risk of stranded and walking out.  Also a truckbed or toy hauler/cargo trlr is better then a car trlr with jeep thus demanding truck camper.  Lil Mahindra jeeps are really cool but until reliability is proven I think I would probably take it where it shouldn't go and break it and be screwed.
MAGA!  Again..

SxS. You can put heaters, wipers, front/rear windshields, doors and tops, winch on them and make them street legal.. Cheaper to run and insure too than a Jeep.

I had Jeeps and was getting stuck and couldn't go as many places with it. Mine had 400 hp with lockers front and rear. You would slide sideways on ice and snow because of the lockers, even with the best tires on it.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I have an LJ and a Tacoma. For hunting LJ is overkill in wheeling ability and under kill in reliability and space. In order to go above a Taco's capability you'd have to go looking for trouble. Also heeps are money pits once you start wheeling them... Next up is Beadlocks and 37's. Just empty every pocket: JEEP.
