Thank you.  He is definatly a character.  Slightly off topic But what age is good to start him on field work.

you could always drive him by the gun range now before he really has any fear so that he is used to it.

the first weekend we had my pup we took her by the range and now she falls asleep when we start shooting as apposed to my father in laws pup that can't stand to be within a quarter mile of a gun shot.

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.

Right now, take the pup some where he/she can chase birds, butterfly's, grassshoppers, whatever.  Let the pup build up his confidence by exploring the world around him.  Mix it up and take him different places where he can experience different types of cover.  The first year is an important time, the foundation.  If and when you intro to birds make sure it is a scenario where the pup wont be scared or hurt (big birds, flapping wings, etc...).  The first bird my pup saw up close was a wing locked pigeon, he pointed and then went and pummeled it.  It lit his bulb.  Have fun, the dog will feed off of you.  When my pup was young he would always look to me for reassurance, lead by example, explore and bust cover with confidence.  The pup will learn to do the same.  Encourage him and show him.

Regarding taking the pup to the gun range:  I got a lot of conflicting advise on this, mainly guys telling me they do it, and every expert or trainer I talk to and book author I read says dont do it.

To summarize their advice to me - you want total control of the situation where the pup is introduced to guns and for him to associate guns with birds and fun.  A gun range is totally random meaningless noise and some percentage of the time pups will get freaked or just have a bad experience and you'll create an apprehensive gundog.  I was out at Sunnydell this weekend and one of Chucks friends is a GSP trainer/owner prepping for the NAVHDA hunt tests, she said use a cap gun at meal time.  Joan Bailey's book and George Hickox also recommend staying away from the shooting range.

I'm not sure achieving a general disinterest (i.e. falling asleep) with gunfire is the ideal association you want him to have, especially if you want him to be steady to the shot.
Rowdy's advice is right on with the advice I've gotten, get the pup excited about birds first, then introduce gunfire as part of releasing a bird/decoy to retrieve.  In the George Hickox video he introduces a distant .22 crimp when a bird is released, then close .22, then distant .410, then close .410, etc.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

very good advice.

you can make a dog gunshy by bringing them to the gunrange.

I started by slaping my hand on a table when my pup was eating then I would bang pots and pans together then I used a kids toy cap gun then a .22 rifle
