Salt blocks

Put out a salt block with selenium on tuesday. went in to put a trail cam on it today, and the area was already tore up with elk tracks. anyone else ever use them? I am getting them from wilco farm store.

Selenium is "said" to help combat hoof rot.  Don't know if it is true, but that is all I buy, and yes, the results can be like that

Work great, a loose more complete mix with a balance of ingredients would work better and help with foot rot.  Talking zinc, copper and iodine from bioavailable sources.  The right ones, including vitamin E and selenium here, in the right proportions over time would help the problem.  I contend that the decrease in cattle numbers that were supplied with these nutrients that made them available to elk and deer is part of the problem.

I have used salt and mineral results with great luck for elk.  They find them and will tear the area up in a hurry.

I tried several years ago, great results until season opened.
Opening day was a constant parade of hunters following tracks/trail.

Attracting elk to a salt/ feed source is actually the worst thing to prevent hoof rot... helps spread the disease. Unless of course you are treating with antibiotic...

Yea trail cam attractants could be another cause of hoof rot increase ? Miniscule I suspect tho?

It actually being studied right now. That mineral licks are now the leading cause of hoof rot. A total ban of all minerals so. Will be issued!!

we used to be able to buy selenium in a more concentrated form but it's been greatly reduced to where it's only trace amount,  heavier selenium had a positive effect on things like calf scour and hooves.

I have been using Trace Mineral Salt in the bags ever since a buddy of mine had his big mineral block stolen by some anti hunters.  The granules melt into the soul when it rains and the elk and deer will eat the dirt if I do not keep dumping salt.  I have been hunting the same spot for 3 years and the elk and deer have dug a hole about a foot deep and three foot round

get the ones with sodium sulfate also Eastside elk love them no luck with Westside and Salt

had a 2x3 bull and a huge spike along with a bunch of cow elk on them today. elk have the area ripped up. in the trail cam pics they just spend the whole time licking the salt blocks.

I have a spot with blocks and a loose blend.  I have watched the deer take to both.  Birds seem to like the loose too.
