Blacktails getting hard horned
« on: August 30, 2018, 02:27:50 AM »
Yesterday morning got me excited. Kept it under wraps while bear hunting till now. I saw 2 bucks that had shed velvet and found an alder sapling completely thrashed and had blood spots and such on it. Of course I have longer to wait this year as I switched back to modern for deer this year. But still, its got me excited!

No pictures this go around. We will see after I get out again tomorrow morning. I didnt have my camera and 1 buck was 200+ yards off, the other was in the dark by the road while I was driving near my hunting area.

There was a hard-horned three point blacktail in my back yard yesterday that was pushing two does. Seems a bit early even for pre-rut behavior, but he was clearly interested in 'em (and they were just as clearly *not* interested in him).

The bucks in Ocean Shores have been steadily stripping the velvet since mid-August.  Never seen it happen this early.

I saw 3 bucks last Saturday. One little spike already polished off the velvet. The big fork and another spike still were in velvet. They were all hanging around with a little doe. Sniffing her up and getting run off by the big buck. She was trying to cuddle up to the big one.  :dunno:

From 18 Aug - No velvet.  First time I've seen this buck, at least this year.  Spittin' image of the buck I shot there a couple years ago.

Watched a spike and a 2x3 spar last weekend by the front gate of the transfer station in Rainier.  Both were hard horned or at least were after their sparring session  :chuckle:
