Yup, its 206's favorite hang out.  Make sure you have a winch and cable to help the pavement princesses powerstrokes out of the ditch.  Pack extra designer brand camo, bring at least 2 packs (preferably Busch in the orange can) to toss out the window, and slam your door before bugling 10ft off the road. :IBCOOL:

Sarcasm aside, its a pretty fair assessment...
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

So I hunt in the Nanum, which I have hunted since 1988 and today my son and I were hunting above and below a non green dot road when low and behold I hear a four wheeler driving down the closed road so my son went to see what the deal was and they were driving cross country to retrieve and elk that was shot on Saturday with a cross bow. When he asked them the one fellow who by the way was very belligerent towards my son, told him that he was a disabled hunter and had a card that said he could do be down on these non green roads to retrieve his elk. for some reason this does not seem legal to me, I would like to know if this is true?

There are only 2 closed gated roads designated for disabled hunters in the colockum unit. They can gain access to through a drawing, of selected they can obtain a key for entry past the gates. atv’s are the only motorized vehicles they can drive and they are to stay on the groomed roads. Being disabled does not give them permission to be trail blazing across the woods. Things like that are getting places shut down and give hunters a bad reputation. One gate is called Croker flats and it’s located off Swift creek. The other is called boulder/ winch hill and is located off boulder rd. If this isn’t the area you were they were definitely breaking the law. Not to mention trail blazing across the woods with an atv is the perfect way to start a forest fire and end the hunt for everyone!

In all seriousness trail cameras are key. Do not forget to set one up on the road to your camp. The other 1 should be set up so it faces your camp. With any luck you'll actually catch the elusive camp thief on film.

:yeah:
I have seen and reported a guy for doing the same thing last year, ATV, crossbow and says he has a card or letter but can't produce one.  Off roading and breaking trail into his blind that he moves farther into the woods everyday.

He actually said "I ride in every morning to my blind and the elk are all around it, when the sun comes up they are gone so I move the blind farther in at lunch time and try again the next morning with the same result, elk here at dark and bugling farther away from me, my quad and blind when the sun comes up."  :bash:

As far as the zoo goes, it was not bad this year.  I didn't see another hunter when I was in the woods.  Elk were pretty quite but I think it is starting to ramp up.  Had a 6x6 bull, six cows and four calves in my driveway Saturday morning but as usual the elk won.  After chasing them around for a couple of hours back to the cabin for water and here comes a smaller 6x6 bull sniffing around where the first group of elk had been.

I was into a big herd Sunday morning. Probably 300 yards off of the road. I could hear them from my tent. People kept driving by. I left the tent at day light, then snuck in on them. 4 bulls and lots of cows. All by myself. I was thinking as all are driving the roads? What’s the odds of a road hunter?

I have spent last 2 morning 2-300 yards from the road, in elk and listening to the vehicles rumble by.

Schedule has kept me from getting in the elk woods but one day out of the last few years.  I decided to make that a total of 2 days this season with a day trip on Sunday.  Reading this post had me concerned for what the experience would be given it was a weekend day and that the GMU I was hunting was open for cows the second half.  Before my schedule made elk hunting nearly impossible, the GMU I hunt had became infested with all the stuff mentioned above but I seen elk every year.  To my surprise, I seen no other hunter and only seen one set of tracks on the road over mine since getting to my spot at midnight until when I left at 230 that afternoon.  I seen no elk this time but plenty of sign and heard 3 bulls bugle and some cows talking as well.  I can confidently say that they were elk considering the lack of hunters in the area compared to my past experience.  Most of the campsites of the past were vacant, most meaning only about 20% of the normal crowd from 5 years ago.  I don't know if it is the fact that cows are not legal for all season now that detoured other hunters or other circumstances, but I like it.
