Moose Rut
« on: September 18, 2018, 06:00:30 PM »
Less than 2 weeks until my moose hunt and I'm really starting to get antsy. I'm sure all the other tag holders are feeling the same. I figured there are rut threads for deer and elk so why not moose  :dunno: :chuckle: Has anyone been seeing any rut activity? Post up any rut updates you might have and as always pictures are very appreciated.

I saw a lone young bull moose while elk hunting the east side last Sunday.  He was munching away and didn't have any signs of being in the rut or having a lady friend around.  I think he was only a 1.5 year old guy so probably not the most representative.

Good luck, post pics and stories!

Not sure how to cut/paste a thread but I started one a few weeks ago about a bull and cow at my place in North Spokane.  He was all sorts of worked up.  I called him back in about a week ago with my two boys, it was awesome.  Good luck on your hunt.

Similar experience as Hoyt on archery opener closer to border... Last light a big old bull w cow and I believe, a calf, were hightailing it past me at about 45yds. I let off some amateur calls and they stopped dead in their tracks. The bull came in really close. The next morning at shooting light, some were  close and extremely vocal. I was taking a nap later around mid day and woke up to the sound of something large heading towards me! Unzipped the tent a little and saw a bull at about 30 yds that was heading back up the mtn. Maybe my snoring brought him in lol. Good luck out there Grundy. Early Oct is prime time!

Just a bump before the weekend.  If anyone is going to be out and about in the moose woods this weekend. One more week and it will be me!

So how long does the rut last?  I have a late tag in unit 1-3 in Idaho (Nov 1-15) - the cabinet mountains.  REALLY thick area.  Some of the locals I've been talking to have recommended to try calling clear into November.  I will be willing to try it, but any of you experts have any thoughts?  Just spook them?

Second question for you all who have spent more time than I have - it's a late hunt and snow is the big variable.  The bulls go up or down with the snow?  Typical of other units, there is some high fairly open areas, but closer to town has large clear cuts.  Most just say that the moose are where you find them, and look all over the place.  Been up there twice and saw one cow and calf in lake off the highway.  Did find 2 wolf killed moose....

I found a couple of scrapes along a logging road that looked like a bull had peed in them recently. But the moose woods still seem pretty quiet around Spokane.

Yes the moose have started rutting.  Not full bore by anymeans but they have started.

I'm in Idaho, but yes, we've seen moose that are rutting now too!

Pretty much guaranteed.   There will be a lot of nocturnal action with the warm daytime temps and bright moon, but it will get better everyday for the next two weeks

Nice. Supposed to get rain with mid 50's highs and lows in the 30's Sunday through Tuesday. Hopefully that helps.

I saw a bull this weekend with 2 cows. He seemed to be rutting pretty hard to me. Grunting up a storm and racking bushes

moose rut is a very weird one of all the deer species. I have seen moose in full bore rutting from September to mid November. I have watched areas have the moose in a frenzy the first week of October to die off immediately and then travel a few miles to another area weeks later and see moose going nuts.

Just got back from hunting moose in Montana for 8 days. Would still be there but had truck issues. Seemed like the moose there were starting to rut but not very hard. Covered a ton of ground and ended up actually never laying eyes on a moose. Found an area that had fresh bull pits and it was chewed up with rubs beds and bushes had been fed on hard. We called everywhere and never had a response until the night of the 27th. Heard 4 grunts close to us but then he went silent and never showed himself. Long story short I think some moose are rutting but I don’t think it’s going full bore by any means.

Thought I'd bump this up.  Hows the rutting behavior going now?  Anybody seeing or hearing more activity?

They were rutting on the first when I killed mine. Saw a bull with a cow and another bull bloodhounding a trail.
