South Dakota pheasants 2018
« on: October 31, 2018, 11:00:38 PM »
The South Dakota pheasant opener was exciting as always. Plenty of birds but still to many crops unharvested to make it easy hunting. Definitely more birds than last years record low. I expect once the crops are out it may be  good enough to make it worth while to go back for a late hunt. We were in south central SD where some of our guys have hunted the same property for 35 years. Another group hunts the same family farms with the senior guy having hunted the property for 56 years. It is a tradition.

That looks and sounds like a great time.  Being part of a long standing tradition like that is pretty neat, congrats on a great trip.

For someone who has never been to SD before, is there public ground open where you can find birds? Do landowners give permission to hunt to non residents?

There is public land to hunt. Also you can hunt the road edges up to the fence. You see guys parked and work 1 side and come back the other. I don't know how easy it is to get permission on private land. Later in the season I am sure is easier.
