Many rangefinders now days  can output moa’s also so its range dial and shoot with any turret scope.

Ive got some learning to do but isnt yardage turrets based off of MOA?  I understand that atmosphere can change which can/will have an impact on what distance you should shoot for, but unless you go full enchilada with a range finder that puts considers atmosphere and angles why go with MOA turret?

Yardage turrets can be made on MOA or MIL turrets, but you usually see them on MOA-based elevation turrents. Unless your just going to be shooting under 400 yards or so in generally the same hunting area, they are a gimmick and you should avoid them per my prior post.

Theoretically, one could pack around a big sleeve of custom dials with every conceivable combination of environmentals and use the dial that matches those conditions (hint: and you'd have to gather the environmental data anyway to determine which custom dial to use for the prevailing conditions), or they could simply gather the data, get the dope (manually or automatically via blue-tooth or a ballistic rangefinder), spin the turret and press the bang button. It can be done in seconds.

Curious to know how many shooters that rely on these speed dials also buy the windage dials.As far as i know the windage dial (we will use Kenton for example)use 1 wind speed for compensation.If you use the pre conceived wind speed past 500 yards you could be off your mark buy quite a few inches.

I looked at the Razor AMG and Leupold Mark 5 & 6. I ended up going with the Razor AMG. Kahles has a couple of interesting options as well.

If you want the ability to consistently dial in yardages and have repeatedly I’d go Nightforce, or maybe swaro or maybe a nicer vortex. The the scope you mentioned left a lot to be desired in that department for me so I switched to Nightforce and have had nothing but great functionality and clear glass !

I’m not a fan of yardage dials, but for the correct conditions and with some know how they can be effective. I’ve seen a huskemaw dial and shoot a bull elk at 1000+ yards. 2 shots in the kill zone and it was over. That said the conditions matched the turret and it was verified.

I prefer and use a rangefinder that spits out moa or mil corrections based on range and atmospherics collected at the time of ranging. They will give you wind holds as well. I personally like to know what a full value 5 mph wind hold is and then decide what my hold will be at shot time based on what I see through the scope.

It should be noted for those that are interested in long range shooting and may not know, but the "speed dial" yardage turret dials are just etched by a laser for distances by the manufacturer with the custom inputs you provide them.

They are just external reference marks.  They don't have anything to do with the actual operational internal guts of the scope turrets.

Every click adjustment is going to coincide with the specification of the scope.  So, even if you are using a dial whose custom engraved enviros (or even the bullet load data) are way off for a particular shot, you can still count the "clicks" necessary to make a precise shot.

The problem that comes into play when using custom turret dials that don't fit the existing enviros is that you will have to patiently and precisely count through a lot of those small individual clicks, particularly if your turret clicks are kind of soft and mushy.  And, heaven forbid if you don't have a zero stop feature on the scope and get lost.  Not good!

For example, let's say your dope at sea level for a particular bullet load suggests coming up 41 MOA...that's counting in 164 clicks if you have elevation turret gradients of 1/4 MOA.  Tick 1...tick 2...tick 3...etc., etc., etc.,

So yeah, you can do it, but if you're taking a long range class with a high round count or are thrust into a situation where you need/want to make a shot (when your speed dial turrets inputs don't match the current enviros) and time is of the essence but you have to sit there and impatiently count ticktickticktickticktickticktick 164 times...

      

So much for "speed dial".    No thank you.

A normally graduated dial that you can just quickly zzzzzzzzzzip! in your elevation dope (and windage if you don't feel comfortable holding) is what I would recommend all day, every day.

Interesting thing about wind that I had to learn was that wind direction doesn’t just move the bullet more or less horizontally.  A left to right wind moves the bullet down and right.  Tail wind moves the bullet up.  Etc.

People actually count clicks? I just send a sighter shot in the general area of the target then hold a little high and left. No matter what gun I'm shooting, my wind hold is always "a little left".
