Col Bob WIlderness
« on: November 27, 2018, 03:30:02 PM »
Looking forward to next season, is the Col Bob area worth it for deer and elk? I have been searching and really haven't seen to much posted on the site. That tells me a couple of things:1)There's not a lot of animals there. 2)The terrain is so rugged that no one goes there, or 3)That its a great place with big bulls and bucks. I'm kinda leaning towards the second and third.  I have seen elk in the valley, which I know I cant hunt because I am not a MH. Looking at google earth, the area south of Mt O'Neill and Wooded Peak looks good. I know that truly find em I'll have to put boots on the ground. My weapon will be either bow or rifle. Leaning towards bow for elk and rifle for deer so I can be up there in September.

Hunted that area for years, I would enter at fletcher canyon or the col bob trail head on south shore rd. my fav was both. Ziegler canyon, follow bob trail to the top of Ziegler canyon and drop down in to it. about a 30 min walk once ya get past switch backs. on right hand side of trail down hill side, there is a huge moss  covered rock that is were I would drop in. zig zag both sides of creek pop back up to trail before water falls. can do in morning dark to out in eve dark. great long day hunt. same with fletcher canyon, just follow the trail UP. spent the night on this hunt a couple of times, but did many times in a day as well. don't think it has been maintained in years. long day hunt. Best be in very good shape. I'm to old to do those hunts any more. beautiful area. and there are animals hunt slow. some of my best memorable hunts. I was hunting these areas in the late 80s and 90s. Good luck.

Been having a lively discussion about this area on the deer hunting forum, seems like there are  two camps. 1.) There's nothing there and 2.) They are there it's just really hard to hunt. I'm leaning toward 2

Option 2 for sure.  Something you may notice, there are some bucks out in the coastal units that just have a slightly different look.  They seem to be longer and fatter than the blacktails a little more inland (east slope peninsula).  Referring to body length--neck and legs are same length as the other blacktails.  Maybe just a few freak deer.  :dunno:

Pretty hopeless for deer, just not many there. Rugged for elk and that is stating it mildly.

What Bruce said. Not a lot of BT. Yes, there are elk, but Holy Cow the access is awful. I could think of 20 better places to hunt

Yes, I did what you are thinking a few years ago. It doesn’t happen often, but in this case I became wiser with experience.
