you are so excited to grow a third. boom and...
 a) the big one gets away, or worse, B) you now have two downed deer....

Very typical in deer.  The little guy is out in the open and something bigger lurks behind.  Ill add him to the in the background thread too, but thought this photo might illustrate a point.
