If Benchmark will true the action, chamber and install a new barrel for $850 out the door plus tax, that's a pretty good deal and I'm not sure you'll be able to get it done any cheaper.

Remington triggers aren't that bad and can safely be tuned to around 2.5lbs, maybe a little less, with no creep and they're plenty good for a hunting rifle.  If you're wanting to do some precision long range work then a aftermarket trigger can benefit you but for a hunting rifle or even one you shoot from a bench out to 600 yards or so I'm not sure it's necessary to spend the money on a $200+ trigger when a $50 trigger job will work just as well for you.  I probably sound a little hypocritical on triggers considering I have aftermarket triggers in all of my guns except 2 or 3, but it's only because I've kind of spoiled/ruined myself by using those triggers and you develop a certain feel for them.  The tuned Rem 700 triggers I have are pretty dam close though and are more than adequate for a hunting rifle.

I'm not exactly sure what comes on those SPS youth models for a stock but if it's one of those plastic things, I don't know that I'd spend any amount of money messing with it trying to make it better.  Find yourself a HS Prec or B&C take off stock, they're a much better stock and worth spending the money to have them bed.  The LOP may be a little long but any decent smith can shorten it up for you and put a new pad on.  I had the HS Prec. stock on my daughters 6.5-284 shortened up a couple years ago and it worked out well.

If you budget yourself for around $1500 max, including putting a different stock on it and having it properly bed, you'll end up with a really nice semi custom 6.5 Creed that'll shoot a variety of bullets really well and she'll be proud to throw it over her shoulder for many years to come.  If it was me, this is what I'd be doing with it.

JBar, are you going to be hand loading for this or shooting factory ammo all the time?

When I rebarreled my rem 700 I went barrel nut from northland shooter supply.  Cost about $600 bucks total for the barrel, barrel vice, action wrench and recoil lug alignment tool and recoil lug and go gage and no go.  It shoots very well imo(see thread “shot out my 243” for details). No gunsmith required and I had my barrel in 3 days and now have the tools needed to rebarrel all my rifles

I am in the process right now.  Sent my barreled action to benchmark barrels a month ago.  They will true the action and install another barrel for around $850.  From there the little things start to add quickly, new trigger, picatinny rail, cerakote, muzzle brake, stock.  So you should figure out how much you are willing to spend and decide from there.  You might not gain much of anything from just installing a new barrel.

Trued and new barrel for $850 is great. That and a bell and Carlson stock and you’d have a hell of a shooter. You can always do scope mounts and trigger and other upgrades later on, but mostly the barrel and action make the gun.

If $600-$850 is the going price all parts and service, getting a new or used rifle really seems like the best deal. If I were shopping for a used rifle, I'd be checking out the gun gallery/used rifles at Cabela's over the next month or two.

Check out Precise Shooter in Lynnwood, a bit of a drive but they can get anything on their website in about a week.

Or get a barrel from Northland Shooting Supply. I rebarreled my savage and couldn’t believe the difference!

it pretty much comes down to do you want something that is a bit nicer is hands-down going to shoot better where is the accuracy and quality of the current rifle sufficient and you just need a new caliber. If it's just a caliber change I would just get another rifle as you are going to save yourself a lot of money that way. If you're looking to go fancy though some nice new bling for the rem

I'd skip the action truing and throw a new barrel on it. The most I'll do on a factory rem 700 is true the bolt face if it needs. It'll shoot great unless something is really out of whack.

If you want/need a trued action sell what you got and buy a custom. you'll be money ahead in the long run.   :twocents:

If she is only shooting to 500 yards just buy her a new rifle.  You can buy one heck of a rifle for $850 and they all will shoot to 500 now days.  Just my two cents.

Kinda depends on what you consider good accuracy.

If you're only going to be shooting factory ammo and your accuracy requirements are in the 1in +/- at 100 then a off the shelf factory gun will likely suit you well.  Now, that's not to say some don't shoot better than that and I'll be the first to admit they do because I've had some that did as well, but what you get when you go with a semi custom build and a good quality custom barrel and chamber job, is a rifle that'll consistently shoot a variety of bullets/loads in the 1/2 in. or better range and the key word in that sentence is, consistently.

Part of the problem with factory guns is they are kind of a luck of the draw.  Sometimes they're pretty decent, other times, not so much.  The barrel and chamber is the heart and soul of any gun and factory barrels can be very hit or miss.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!! 500 would be her max range and that would be off the bench, her max hunting range would be 400 +/-. She's picking the caliber so thats outta my hands, I was just hoping a quick barrel swap would be the best way to go. She wants a synthetic stock so I'm not sure if a smith can shorten one or not (I'm sure they can). I'll kick my options around and see what we come up with. On that note does anyone remember who was selling that x bolt 6.5 a couple weeks ago? Was it @scottfrick
