Elk in 407?????
« on: December 23, 2018, 02:17:56 PM »
Thinking about heading up to 407 after Xmas and seeing if we can chase around some elk. Looking at onx most of the land is private so we will be limited to where we can go. Is it even worthwhile heading out? Or are the elk all posted behind no hunting and private property signs?

Merry Christmas to you all and hopefully your stalking are filled with hunting gear!

I noticed that change in the regs this year as well and thought it might be a fun idea to entertain if the winter steelhead season is as dismal as the rest of the runs this last year. And did notice onX had some public lands though I'm not familiar with anything up there and what access would be like. But its literally  a trek across state for me so unless I get really bored I doubt I'd drive up there and spend the $150+ in gas while my wallet is still recovering after the holidays. Tried searching around for any info on elk in that direction but didnt come up with much. Good luck if you do make it out there!

Didn't even notice that change.  I'm up here every year in Bellingham at the in-laws.  I may need to put some effort into this if it's posted up next year.  Never done much research around here for elk.  The majority of that GMU is so urban it would definitely be a long shot.  Maybe why WDFW opens it up for so long for any elk - there's . nothing there but at least you can't say you didn't have a chance to go!

If I see one in my travels this week I'll let you know.

Good luck. They don’t really ever come into 407 and when they do the natives up in deming run them out pretty quick. Not saying it’s impossible but I live in whatcom county and I’ve never went for them.

I live up here and rarely go out there. They hang out on the border of 407 and 418. There is a few spots that are public, but rarely hold elk. The other parts that do are private timber company and $250 fee or private farm lands. I’ve seen them out there a bunch of times, but never on public. I can show you spots if you’re still interested. Not trying to be a downer just want to save you gas money.

A local will occasionally whack one when it shows up in their pasture but pretty bleak other than that. The reason for the season isn't because there are elk there, it is to ensure there never will be. Too much hassle having elk in 407.

I know this is old but I’m just curious if you still feel the same about 407 as you did back then ? I live in anacortes and was thinking about trying 407 this year . But as it’s been stated it is a lot of private land . Maybe 454 would be better for me . However I’ve never been out for elk before so just being out there would be better then nothing I’d imagine
