2012 F350 6.7 powerstroke issue
« on: January 03, 2019, 12:42:58 PM »
I was driving down hwy410 the other day and was coming up a small rise.  The transmission downshifted and I heard a very loud pop and lost power.  I pulled into a parking lot, raised the hood and found the pipe behind the power steering reservoir had blown off the fitting.  I was able to reconnect the pipe and secure it with the hose clamp with the spring on it.  It seems to be driving fine now, but what caused it? (Assume too much pressure)  The pickup has never had an issue and it has approximately 77,000 miles on it.

Thanks

What’s the pipe for?🤔

What’s the pipe for?🤔
The pipe was obviously for the power since when it popped off he lost all power....

Charge air cooler tube blew off and you lost boost.

My guess is a boost pipe that popped off. I would check to be sure no oil or coolant got on to the pipe making it easier to slide off, if not, replace with a Bodicker style clamp and cinch it down good. Take it back out and send it.  :twocents:
P.S. check inside the pipe for oil as well.

Ya...make sure the CAC tube isn't broke too. It's probably fine and just replace the clamp.

There was quite a bit of thick black oil on the tube

Probably normal soot buildup if it's on the inside of the tube.

Is the truck stock or tuned? It's possible an over-boost situation could cause this. A stock truck wouldn't really do this without some other symptoms though.

Tuned.  Here is a picture of the pipe that popped off.  It was the end with the spring loaded clamp.

Had the same thing happen to me on a trip back from Yellowstone 3 years ago.  I was in a no cell service area.

I would replace the clamp and then go lean on it to make sure it doesn't pop off again. If it does I suspect an overboost condition as jackelope mentioned.
