Bobcat As Bobcat Bait?

I have heard several Canadian trappers say the best bait for Lynx is Lynx. Has anyone had success using bobcat bait for bobcat?

Yes. I only tried it once and trapped a nice tom. Totally forgot I did that a couple years ago. The bummer is we ate a cat a couple weeks ago and it was good so...…

Bruce is right. I tried bobcat meat bait and only had one taker, a young buck mink. He came to the bait every night for days and jumped up onto it. I named him Tarzan and you'll see why. I finally pulled the bobcat down and set one of George Brady's 5 x 5 x 24 traps for him. I caught the mink on the first night. I'm beginning to learn that wild cats are very finicky if they aren't really hungry. If they are hungry enough, and they can get hungry after it snows, they will eat almost anything. I thought raccoon was useless as a bait until I had a cougar walk under my cabin deck and steal one off my wood pile and eat the whole thing. The coon wasn't even skinned yet. So I guess I would recommend to save bobcat carcasses for mink bait if you aren't going to eat them. Bobcat will come readily to fresh beaver meat and will come eventually to lesser fare if they are hungry enough. Good luck!

I have been using coon carcasses as a draw for civets this year and have had three stolen by cougar. Coyotes would probably take them if they could reach them. No bobcats taking them that I can see but I do remember when my Dad had hounds we saw a number of times bobcats trailing coon in the snow.
It gets cold things get less particular.

This 12 pound female came and ate a bobcat carcass so bobcat meat CAN work as bobcat bait.

I hung one in a tree in my back yard a while back, but nothing has shown any interest. Thought i might get to shoot a yote from my living room window. This guy showed up on the cam i pointed at it, but showed no interest. He was following my tracks i made about 5 hours earlier, followed out of the woods to within about 20 yards of my house.

I know for a fact bobcats will kill and eat housecats, so I have zero doubts that they would eat there own.

Did you use some house cats for bait?

There are lots of guys on the east coast that LOVE bobcat meat for coyote and fox bait.

A lot of the paste baits for sale are made with bobcat meat. IMO though when you are talking about a rotted down product it is no longer a food lure like a fresh or tainted bait. It might well be a good lure but I would not expect the same reaction as with an actual hunk of meat.

Nope, I'm talking about trappers making their own baits, chucks of meat, ground meat etc, lots of guys back there swear by bobcat meat for fox and yote bait. I personally like feral cat, beaver and muskrat meat above bobcat meat for bait. But there was a bunch of guys pulling in good numbers of red fox that used bobcat meat for bait. If course it might have also had something to do with what they were mixing it with.

I think bobcat meat is an alright bait, but doesn't have the fat content or the smell that beaver has. I can smell the distinct smell of beaver, even when it is frozen solid and feet away, where as I could not smell frozen bobcat if it was right under my nose.
The smellier the meat, the better in my experience. This year I did an experiment and baited one trap with beaver, duck, salmon, and venison (all non edible parts). I have caught 3 cats in that trap this year. One ate the entire duck and did not touch the rest. The other 2 ate the entire duck, most of the beaver, and left the rest. I also had another trap baited with both duck and beaver. The one cat in that trap ate the entire duck and did not touch the beaver. I think bobcat meat would fall somewhere near the attraction of venison based on it's fat content. Ill throw some in a cage and let you know the results.
