Electrolysis in Aluminum boats?
« on: May 26, 2019, 08:59:43 AM »
Does anyone have experience with repairing electrolysis in aluminum boats? I'm looking at buying a 18' duckworth that has a few pinholes. I don't believe the boat actually leaked but am a little concerned anyway.
I sounds like the owner kept the battery on a trickle charger without a battery disconnect and its likely the electrical current caused it.

If there a pin holes, there will be bigger holes coming.  Think of a beer can, pretty strong until it is pinched or poked.  After that weak and easy to crush or rip.

I’d recommend a hard pass on that. Whoever owns it will spend a lot of cash on welding.

Pass, if there are pinholes, there are many other places that have thinned and it will be an ongoing issue.  Additionally, the story doesn't add up, boats are trickle charged all the time without issue.  If the boat was wired correctly, all the aluminum should be at the same electrical potential.
