6.5 creedmore to 6.5 prc conversion?
« on: June 10, 2019, 05:56:09 PM »
Is this possible without buying a new barrel? I have a tikka t3x in 6.5 creedmore and was wondering if this is doable for a reasonable price. I think the prc cartridge is still a short action so it should work? Any western Washington gunsmith recommendations? Thanks

You would need a different bolt face for sure. CM rim dia is .473 and the PRC is a mag dia rim of .532

If you have to buy a long action rifle to make it work then you might as well build a 6.5-375 Ruger  :dunno:

Hmm, aren't Tikkas all the same length action? Magazine blocks being the difference?

the 6.5 prc is 300 rcm necked down to 6.5.  Just imagine a 6.5 with 98gr capacity. Would be a bullet and barrel eater lol

they have about a 60 grain case capacity, and can run off a short action but you may not be able to seat them as deep as you want

Did somebody mention a pointless wildcat that duplicates the performance of a readily available factory option? :chuckle: Besides, 98gr capacity is nothing, the 6.5 Badger is 114gr!

Back on topic! You'd just need to have the bolt face opened up and the barrel rechambered. You should be able to send your bolt in to a handful of different places who could do that work fast at a pretty good price. If you're feeling ambitious you could recut the chamber yourself for about $50 and an hour of you time. Rent a PRC reamer and headspace gauges and just run it into the barrel by hand while it's still on the action. It's probably not the way most people would do it, but if you're reasonably hand with tools you should be able to pull it off without much trouble.

Thanks for the input! I definitely don’t want to mess with it by myself.

I think you need a bigger magnum bolt face. Thinking a 300 mag

Rem 700's are easy to have the bolt face opened up because you change the extractor but I'm not sure it's so easy on all the other actions out there.

i wasn’t referring to the 6.5 prc.  the 6.5/375 ruger would have around 98gr H2o capacity

Unless they've changed how they do things and actually use a short action for short action cartridges, you should be able to get the bolt stop removed and the chamber cut for a 6.5-06 or 6.5-06ai. If they're actually using a short action these days I think you'd be stuck going to a 6.5-284 without messing with the bolt face.

There's worse things than being "stuck going to a 6.5-284".  :chuckle:

I'm guessing you probably didn't mean it like it read, but it did make me chuckle reading it.

IMO, one of the best things the 6.5 Creed has going for it is there is some really good shooting factory ammo available for the 6.5CM and for those that don't reload, this is a big plus.  If you reload, it doesn't really matter and you can go with just about anything you'd like.
