Unit 39
« on: June 14, 2019, 08:31:14 AM »
Well sense the tags didn’t work out for me this year. I am going to meet my brother in Idaho. It’s been about 15 years or so sense I have been in our spot. It’s in the very north tip of unit 39. We hike in about 5 miles then hunt from there. Usually see nice bucks. But anyway
Have you been up in the north if 39 area? Wolfs? Should I for sure re spend the extra on a wolf tag?

I havent been there recently.   I think of 39 as being a lot like the Methow. A lot of freaking game and a lot of freaking people.   If you have an area that you know of away from the hordes you can do quite well.  Im sure quantity and quality will decline just as the Methow has.  Its just a matter of when....

There are wolves there, and I bet where you are going is where they are more likely going to be rather than down below.

Not sure if you knew or not, but you can use your deer tag on a wolf.  Expensive option vs $32 for a wolf tag though.

wolves are through the whole unit.  they're right above arrow rock now if you know where to look for them (10 minutes form Boise) in reality ive stopped worrying about wolves. shoot one when you see one, hunt where there deer and elk. there going to all be in the same place anyway so deciding where you hunt by where wolves are not will just keep you on the couch. im actually ok with you guys doing that too

I had a pack howling their way up the valley last year. We set up and starting howling them in but it got dark on us. The herd of elk that were 1100 yards away feeding on a timbered slope could care less. They hardly even looked in the direction of the commotion.

Atlanta's a fun area, just not during deer season. 39 is what it is now. its the unit that boarders the largest population base in the state and out of staters think its the middle of nowhere so they flood it too. ive killed some big deer in there and i hunt it one weekend a year for deer season just because of that. but i don't go in there for any serious hunting. my 1 and 2 week deer trips are elsewhere. theirs always a chance in 39 though, and you'll probably kill a deer, just don't think your going to be alone. probably see more Washington plates while your in that unit then when your driving over.

My brother used to live and work in Idaho. Where we used to go the people stayed down closer to the roads. There is one elk horse camp close by but that is during elk season. Unless that area got discovered big time in the last 15 years should find animals. Yes I will purchase a wolf tag.

I hunted 39 for a good number of years. From opener to last week when everyone and their dog shows up, i never had an issue finding solitude. I wouldn't worry about the crowds unless you aren't a fan of getting off your quad or out of your truck, which a good number of Idaho residents aren't a fan of :chuckle:

let me guess, wolf mountain, goat mountain,Graham, Johnson creek, boarder of saw tooth recreation area, boarder of 43.. yes its all been "discovered" to Karls point though it does calm down after the first weekend when everyone blows there vacation time. finding deers really the easy part in there, finding big deer...

This what I’m counting on. Get out and away from roads and spike camp for a couple of days and welcome anyone else who makes the same effort. I’m really curious to just see how many camps along the road there are. I’m not to worried I just don’t like walking by wall tents at 2 am.
