Volume weight for ML

Was wondering if I am doing this right? Am shooting Triple 7 2ff. Measured 100 gr in volume container and then weighted on powder scale. Appr weighed 80 gr on powder scale. So does 80 gr on powder scale equal 100 gr on volume scale?

You right on... 100 grains of T7-2f buy volume should measure 77.7 grains - that is how it earned its name.  Not all powders will weigh the same per 100 grains of volume.  Even then the weight can change slightly from lot-to-lot.  But in theory, and by rule, all the different BP and BP subs should meter about the same with a volume measure.

Do many guys that are really trying to dial in a longer range muzzleloader measure their powder by weight rather than volume.? I am going to try the blackhorn 209 and have a new breech on the way for my cva.

One thing that is done is to get a more uniform mix of grain size.  Some use large dropper tubes.  Others like to roll the can a few times to mix it up.  The difference in grain size is thought to be more important than weight--so if you weigh or measure at the beginning of a can vs the bottom (where the smaller grains settle) the grain sizes can be different of what you're loading.  I doubt it makes too much difference for most, but for long range guys squeezing out the extra 10 fps or 1/4 MOA might be that difference.  It is usually talked about more for the BPCR guys shooting 1K.

Just remember in a volume measure when we say grains we really are not talking about grains!!?? It is just a term that has been applied.  To advertise and be sold as a BP or a BP sub it must meet certain standards. One of the standards is when a powder is measured in a volume measure we are actually more or less measuring the height of the powder column.  That same height should/will apply to all. The height of the column will not always equal the same velocity from powder to powder.

I think the standard was set along time ago with Swiss BP Powder.  80 grains by volume is nearly 80 grains by weight also. That is the only powder that I no off that is that close.

Side question - why 2F over 3F?  Any benefit?

3f is a finer grain powder - ignites easier - burns faster - reaches peak pressure faster then 2f - and in most cases burns a bit cleaner.

The powder is uniform in size so it is consistent in weight to volume.
Once I measure it out I put my charges in "Lanes Tubes" and that is how I carry it hunting or to the range.
My charges are 80 to 100 grains by volume in size.

Just be aware the volume and weight change with each different lot number. After and including lot #30 it is suppose to be uniform.
