Has anyone hunted Idaho unit 44?
« on: July 08, 2019, 02:56:41 PM »
Just got back from my first scouting trip, really unique unit. Terrain varies so much throughout the unit and deer distribution seems to be all over the map. Just curious what others have experienced and how much things will change between now and Sept 15. Have a couple more trips planned before the season starts, any info old or new would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has or knows someone who has a 44 elk tag, have them pm me.

44 and 43 can be a very crowded area since it's close to Boise.

Get well off the gravel roads and into the country and you should be ok.  One thing odd to get used to is that blaze orange is not required.  That makes it awkward when you're climbing up a hill to get a view only to find other hunters there in camo ticked at you're joining them.  A preseason trip or two will give you some confidence regarding the area.
You'll never get a Big'un if you keep shooting Little'un's.

Are you a wheeler man?   I couldnt believe all of the wheeler access there.  If you are a hiker, it can be a bit frustrating.

We took quads over last weekend. The goal was to learn the road systems and just get a general feel for the area. Definitely a ton of access even more so if you have a dirt bike. That being said there’s alot of country close to roads that you still would have to hike to really cover it. Have you photographed over there much Bone? Probably more so in 45?

Yes and no.  Once the season opens up we found a LOT of quads and bikes in places where they were not allowed. There's just too much country to patrol for law enforcement to keep the quads out of closed areas.  Nothing like hiking for hours in the dark only to get passed up by half a dozen quads rumbling by.

Just got back from another scouting trip, pretty much the same as the last trip, saw some bucks, lots of elk and covered a ton of country. Couldn't locate a lot of the bucks I saw last time but found some new ones. Probably more confused now than I was in June. I'd really like to nail down an area to hunt but no one area seems better than another. Hot and dusty over there and TONS of people! Archery guys have put a couple big deer on the ground.

Good luck to you out there!
