Fishing Chelan for Lake Trout
« on: July 31, 2019, 08:09:24 PM »
My wife, daughter and I spent a morning fishing with Darrell and Dad’s Family fishing guide on July 28, hoping to catch some Lake Trout. I would’ve done it DIY except I don’t have a downrigger, or a fish finder. Oh, and I’ve never fished for these trout before which I learned run pretty deep, about 150 feet deep. And I almost forgot, I don’t own a boat!
It was amazing to watch our guide Jeff constantly adjusting the depth of the downriggers to follow the lake bottom. After 3 hours of no hits, I was starting to sweat just like Jeff. His persistence paid off and my daughter was able to lands 12# Lake Trout!  I’d love to try it again sometime.  Darrell and Dads pulled it off!

I went with them about 9 years ago. We were fishing at 250 feet with 4 poles . It was a blast and caught a lot of fish. We went first week in June. Didn't catch any big fish but caught 4 limits. I want to go in the winter time if I go again. That's when the big boys are caught.

I’d love to do it again. Better find a boat.

I've done it on my own..  Took home a handful both days but yes its tough keeping the downrigger on the bottom..  I was surprised how good they cooked up..  Not salmon, but honestly close to it.  Slimmy suckers in the cooler though!!

Those guys are famous, I went to a talk they gave and they were crazy open with how they catch them and where - even sold me a copy of his presentation for a few bucks that had the spots, gear, etc.  I've never been on his boat but he was more than friendly to DIY fishermen.

If you are used to fishing for chinook on the salt, it's right up your alley minus the short season and hundreds of boats.
