2001 2.7L Tacoma

Thinking of picking up one, only concern is that the 2.7 may be a little underwhelming going up steep grades on freeway traveling. Any pro's/con's?

Either engine choice of that era are fairly underwhelming in the power and mileage categories. The good news is that either engine choice is very reliable with fairly minimal maintenance.

Dad has one.  Auto trans.  Decent get up n go.  Climbs hills fine.  MPG around 18-22.  Load it or tow and its a stinker though.  200+k and been good reliable rig.  Personally I think engine is good but disappointing.  Chev 4.3 vortec had way more power and about same mpg.  I would get Toyota v6 as mpg isn't really much less but power is more.  That said Dad likes it and says it plenty of hp!??

If it has a 5 speed behind it the hill pulling is a little more efficient.

My brother owned an 88, 95 and 08 Toyota pickups  with the 4 cylinder/manual transmission setup.

 The 88 was great. Nice low end power and shifted great. Very easy to drive. No power steering though.

 The 95 would spin out all the time as we lived on a gravel road. It was near impossible not to peal out due to the nature of the engine. There was no lugging the engine in first gear to get going. Rev it up and slowly let the clutch out to get going and feel the rear tires spin out a bit. If you didnt rev the engine you would kill the engine off dead stops. I hated driving it.

The 08 was better in this department as it was more of a cross between the ease of the 88 and the top end type power of the 95.

All of the trucks were used to pull a 2 jet-ski trailer and did fine doing it. The clutch was starting to go out on the 88 when he got rid of it at somewhere around 140k miles I think. The 95's clutch went out at 175k and he swears the clutch in the 08 was starting to act funny with something like 130k miles on the tach.

But you want to talk resale value!!! Man he did good selling those things. All were purchased brand new and he sold them for ridiculously high prices.

I have 361,000 on mine.  Its a manual 5speed.

Have had several. It’s a 4 banger not much power but they do the trick. Make sure it’s a manual! Can’t go wrong with that motor!

My '04 V6 quit being capable of 100mph when it hit 180K.   It's now at 288K

They are great trucks, I’m selling a 2000 3.4 right now. She has been rode hard and put away wet, but there’s no quit in that little pickup! I always thought it had plenty of power for what it was.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger....'01 extended cab, 2.7l, auto, 4wd, 184,000 miles. So far rides and runs well, power isn't as underwhelming as I thought it would be. I have yet to go thru a tank of fuel so seeing what it gets for mpg will be interesting. Only bad thing was previous owner was a smoker, few burns in seat and it F'ing stinks!!! Already shampooed interior, ozoned it but still smells, anyone got any tricks to help eliminate odor or am I just going to have to wait it out?
