Crawdad traps $$$$$

Since when do crawdad traps cost 90 bucks! I’m looking at getting a couple new traps, any suggestions on reasonably priced units that work ok?

I bought half a dozen of them, got two stolen, so down to 4 now plus the holding pen he sells/sold


they work well.  I need to rebuild mine so I didn't use them this year too busy.  Need rubber tube, but thinking about just using paracord to keep the funnels tight and lid closed?

Just cut strips out of an innertube so you have a rubber loop, works real good and I think that is what Bullard uses.

On mine the rubber strips only last two or three years and need to be replaced.

If I get into it a lot more I'll use the commercial traps, or most likely make my own.


as now I only really use them when we plan a boil, and haven't done that in a while.

There are a few of those cylindical ones made by Frabill and Danielson (there's another brand as well... Eagle something).  I've been able to get them at places like Bi-Mart, Sportsman's Warehouse and maybe Cabela's for under $15 before tax.  Caught plenty with em and they are cheap to replace.  I think the Eagle something brand one was like $11.  Cheap stuff. 

As for preserving, I have, but the quality goes, so I try and eat em in the first couple days.  Typically, that means I'm eating them right away or making a dip or some such... Which reminds me.. I may have made a promise in another thread about a recipe.  I guess now is the time.

Thanks for the ideas, I’ll  probably grab a few of the cheap ones for now. I’d have no problem spending more for better quality but I’m worried about them getting jacked. Too many dirt bags around anymore.

I've got a bunch of the Danielson ones that I picked up at Bob's parking lot sale for like $7 a piece.  I've got 2 railroad spikes zip ties to the bottom of each one and a cheap bait sack in each one.  They've always worked great for me.  There is no way I'd spend more than $20 on a trap.

I found the store bought traps I can find here are too small.  I have built 2 out of 10 inch plastic pipe and 2 out of 12 inch plastic pipe that work great.  Just like anything else... a little time and a lot of money will get you what you need

Trapper arnes traps are good, I use the Jumbos. About 35 bucks

I made 4 recently exactly like those 90$ ones for probably 10$ each. It’s very simple I think the key is to put barbs around the opening so they can’t crawl back out. The standard 10$ minnow trap they can get out of.
