A closed road is a closed road.  It means some people can't or won't hunt it and some people will have extra opportunity.  You can still hike in, bike in most of the places or ride a horse.  If you look at the impact of vehicles, closing a road creates more net hunting opportunities as the elk will use more of the woods than if trucks and atvs were moving down the road.

Besides, nobody on this board road hunts, we all hike in 5 miles minimum.   :chuckle:

I think we should be more like Idaho, they get to utilize their quads on most roads, with some walk in only roads. Unlike this state where most are gated with some quad roads.  The 113 unit has a ridiculous amount of gated roads, as I get older the more I’ll be limited to my hunting ability, the use of my quad opens up much more possibilities.  I’m not supporting illegal use of quads, I’m saying there should be more legal use roads!  Question for you guys, if they were using a quad behind the gate at night to get their animal out, ( because of their limited physical ability) would you turn them in?  I’d be pissed too if I walked in for miles and they drove by, but at night after hunting is over and they just need to utilize the quad to retrieve game, I’m all for it.

If you cant retrieve your game without your atv then you shouldnt be hunting up a closed road in the first place.
I’m more talking about the gated roads that have logging equipment running up and down them half the year?  My heart and head will always want to get away from the roads and people, but at 50, I’m feeling it. What about a moose down 4 miles in, in grizz country, would you still turn him in?

Yup, i would.  Dont kill an animal somewhere that youre not able to retrieve it.  I dont see why an oil tag should make a guy exempt from the rules.  Grizz concerns either.  If you choose to hunt 4 miles behind a locked gate in grizz country, thats what it is.  Have some help with you, and carry a hand cannon.  Id help pack a moose out if im around, and im sure a few others on here would too

Rough crowd
I wish we had some exceptions for game retrieval via ATV
But as everything else it would get abused

When that time comes that im feeling my age ill be more selective about where i hunt, and what kind of weather i hunt in.  Plenty of places a guy can hunt without driving behind closed roads.  For now at least.

I guess I just see zero harm in it when it involves a used logging road after hours, but, yes I will call you if I need help!  Appreciate that!  I will have plenty of help the first two weeks, after that I may be solo if my buddy tags out.

:yeah: agree, sucks getting old and I hate the thought of road hunting just because I’m old (when I get old).  But retrieval by quad would be great.

I love hunting behind gates
I hate parking at gates due to theft and vandalism
I take my game cart and pack boards always as I usually hunt solo

If possible (I know, I know, it's usually not), get photos, trailer plate #s or ID numbers and you could get a $500 reward from BHA for reporting illegal motorized use.

This crap frustrates me to no end. Gates aren't in place to protect "dandelions along the road" as one poster said—they're there to reduce motorized impacts on other outdoor users (hunters!) and wildlife, particularly elk that benefit greatly from areas without motorized disturbance.

I fall somewhere between Mudman and Bango Skank on ATV use  :chuckle:

I grew up running a lot of these roads back when FS prided themselves on having nice brushed out road.

Then over the years I had to watch them put gates up and tank trap everything and let the forest go to crap, and back then I rode behind every freaking locked gate I could just because screw em..

I don't do that now, but I get it, boy to I get it  :bash:

That's BS,   I could see some instances where its true (the jerky factory) but certainly not in most areas, the roads had been open for many many years leading back well into the 1800's some roads.   The plan is to lock up roads and let them go into disrepair so environmentalists and groups like BHA can lock it up into wilderness and exclude all but the very fittest of people, and even they don't access very much of the wilderness or roadless areas.

"protect other hunters"....LOL   it excludes them!

Why do you even buy a hunting license or a license to drive a car, then? You pick a choose the rules you want to follow and screw the rest. You're the problem that screws it up for the rest of the ATVers.  It's people like you that have people like me not care when the government restricts your rights.
Except you again make a foolish ignorant statement.  I do not have a Hunt lic for this state currently.  All my atvs are licensed and legal and my UTV is a "street legal lic insurance" vehicle.  And finally I don't Do these things hunting in Wa.  I did use utv in Idaho and nobody beeched about flowers and grass destroyed when I DROVE around those friggin gates many times!!!  I can still support my feelings, I still choose to not pay tickets.
MAGA!  Again..

Yet another thread likely to be locked for promoting illegal activity.  I'm not sure what the deal is lately, everything seems to go sideways.

Was walking down a tank-trapped road in the 560. I'd seen a lot of sign and getting a couple miles in behind two ponds was a really good prospect. I left a little late in the afternoon and had planned to stay until dark. As I approached my spot, I started to hear motors and then saw two ATVs coming toward me on the road, one, a large green Polaris. As soon as they saw me they turned around and took off in the other direction. Hunt ruined. I looked around and there were tracks and damage to the habitat everywhere because of all the rain we'd had. I knew where they were camped, went to the camp, and took pictures of the plates on their ATVs and trucks, which I gave to the FS.

I don't own toys; can't afford 'em. I don't care if people use them legally. But it chaps my a$$ when I hike in a couple of miles on a closed road and here comes a motorized vehicle. It's unethical, illegal, unsportsmanlike, and shows no concern for the environment or the reason that particular habitat is being protected. These guys don't understand the enjoyment of the woods or its value.
Crybaby.  As far as Im concerned it should be "OPEN"!!!  I don't support restrictions to public use on public lands.  Flame me I don't care, Im tired of this crap.  IF we still had freedoms and the gate didn't exist what would ya whine about.  Habitat destruction going around the gate?  Really?  Give me a break now your worried about dandelions damaged?  Don't hide behing the :legal" claim either.  It should and was legal at one time in past before freedoms were taken.  I spent childhood running around mnts and no old guy whined I was illegal behnd closed gate damaging floura.  That is my point.  Buy a darn quad and ride behind gates, support freedoms or quit whining.

Your statement is absurd. Read it out loud to yourself and think about it for a minute. If that doesn't give you at least some pause, there is no hope for you. :bash:

And it just paints hunters in a bad light. Screw the rules? Flaunt the law because that supports our freedom? How is it whining to abide by the rules and have some justified umbrage when others don't to your detriment?  There was probably a time when there were no seasons of bag limits. Do you flaunt the law in that regard too?
