Just got back from Idaho
« on: November 07, 2019, 07:39:27 AM »
Ran into a guy hunting and we got on the subject of wolves.  He told me the Nez Pierce are raising and releasing wolves. He had a friend who killed a tagged wolf and called IDFG and they came out and said that's not our wolf.  He asked who's is it then and he said do your research.

Then coming out of the Snake River we ran into a guy a few days later who shot a wolf while bird hunting.  A small one ran up to him and he shot it with bird shot in the head, stunned him and then loaded a #1 or #2 and killed him right there.

It only took you 21 years to post this

article from 8/1/1998
I didn't read the whole thing

https://www.nwf.org/en/Magazines/National-Wildlife/1998/Wolf-Spirit-Returns-to-Idaho

"...the federal government has contracted an Indian nation to manage the recovery of an endangered species. The tribe´s duties include not only helping to educate the public about wolves, but tracking and studying several dozen wild canids that have been released in nearby national forest lands. In spite of opposition and legal challenges to the program, the wolves are flourishing under the Nez Perce´s unique brand of wildlife management, which blends traditional wisdom and modern science..."

Many tribes participated in wolf recovery across the west, the point is are they still raising and releasing in Idaho?

No, there's enough that they don't need any supplementation to support the population.

No.  They're not raising or releasing wolves.  The tribes never  raised or released them, they only managed some after the feds released

Well that's a weird statement of yours....

Based off the second link above, "In the first two years of the project, the Tribe has released 35 wolves into the Idaho wilderness"

So the wolf was 21 years old?  Or did the OP's friend of a friend of someone he just met shot the wolf 21 years ago?

I sure didn't see a date on that wolf killed, so have no idea.

I assumed the message of the OP was that he was unaware the tribes were raising and releasing wolves or have in the past.  I just did a quick Google search and found articles stating that the tribe was rasing and releasing. Even if not today, they did in the past.
