Rough year on the wet side
« on: November 13, 2019, 03:50:06 PM »
After going 6 for 6 on bulls the last 2 years, our camp went 1 for 3 this year. After being with my brother to shoot his opening day we did not see another elk. Hunted 9 days this season, seems like the elk went for the thick reprod after opening day and stayed there (for the most part)

Still a great time with family and got some meat for the freezers! How was it for everyone else?

Well, I saw elk 4 out of the 9 days I hunted. In those elk were 6 Spikes.

Math is fundamental  :dunno:
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Hmmm... Was just out this afternoon for 3 hours checking for deer and putting out some trail cams and walked up to 4 different groups of elk, in clear cuts feeding. 1pm-330pm. I hunt elk with Archery. Must have been last day relaxation on their part. A collective sigh...

Was one of the worst years for me.  Only saw elk on 4 days.  Not sure if it was the weather or moon that kept them from moving but I know it wasn't for a lack of trying.  Wore out a pair of boots looking.  Only had one shot opportunity but couldn't get a clear enough angle for a clean shot.  Oh well was better than any day working.

It was a strange year in MT as well.  In an area where there are consistently 5-10 herds starting with the opener, there was only one as of last week.  I talked with three game wardens that confirmed they only witnessed the single herd and hadn't seen or heard of any other shot.

I contribute most of it to the weather, warmer temps during the day and not much snow.  It would get cold some nights, but then back in the 40s and sunny during the day.

Deer were abundant, but the elk must still be up high.

Kinda. Still ended up with 5 but we weren't getting into them like we usually do.

The folks I’ve talked to seem to have a slower year than normal.
