Mule Deer hunt Montana
« on: November 22, 2019, 05:51:58 PM »
Ok...help me understand it...I’ve read about the draw system and I want to make sure I understand. I don’t want an elk tag, I just want a deer tag. There are two different pools that get drawn correct? One elk/deer combo and one deer? Is the deer tag statewide or do you draw for certain areas? Is a deer tag easier to get than an elk/deer combo? Easy to get a leftover tag? When do you find out if you get drawn for a deer tag?

The deer tag is for the state. Elk/deer is easier to draw. They give out more tags. Deer is harder to get. In our group 3 of us drew and 4 did not. Can go in as a group but max # is 6. Put in before March find out I believe in April if I'm correct. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Actually the maximum for a group is 5 on the non-resident deer license/tag.

We have a group thinking about putting in for Montana next year, but they keep jacking the fees up.
Elk/deer combination has 17,000 licenses available; $1065.
Deer only has 4,600 licenses available; $639.

Correct , You want "General Deer Combo + $50 Preference point" . 75% of NR Deer tags go to the preference point guys . I'm over here now for the 3rd year . 1st 2 years I didnt buy a point and got a tag , this year I didnt buy a point and didnt get drawn.  Called and got on the alternate list and was assigned #698 . But got lucky Labor day weekend and got the call I had a tag .
Last year 1 in  our group didnt buy a point and was assigned #286 got the call the day before season end that he had a tag ( he declined ) . From now on I'm buying a point.
