Locating elk
« on: December 08, 2019, 08:37:58 AM »
Total newbie looking for some advice. Planning on muzzleloader hunting an area next year (4000 acres) of private land for small band of elk that I’ve watched for years on trail cams.  Unaware of any other groups of elk in the are and am wondering if some of you with experience think that bugling will get a response from an isolated group of animals like these.  Can pinpoint them in a relatively small spot at height of rut, but usually only there at night. Any thoughts much appreciated.

Follow their tracks and see where they go. That’s how I elk hunt in general....I don’t just look for warm bodies, fresh tracks are just as good, then I follow their tracks till I catch up to them. If they aren’t running from something it shouldn’t take long to catch up to them. You could also do this before season just try to figure out where they like to hang out.

Thanks. Limitation I think I have is visibility and stealth. THICK cover. No means to trail them quietly and likely going to be less than 40 yards to see them.  Enough abandoned roads to play wind and get within 4-500 yards of most locations but feel like I’m going to have to get them vocal or simply play the odds on different trails and try to ambush.  Will have cams out all summer and know where my September weekends woll be spent.

Sounds like you need to set up some tree stands. I would start with soft cow calls
