Coded Wire Tag Salmon
« on: January 05, 2020, 05:16:42 PM »

Hello,

My kids and I caught a tagged salmon this summer and when we went in to check where it had been raised it does not recognize the number.

Any suggestions?

CWT00042473

That is the number written on the card the fish checker gave us.

Thanks

It takes a long time for them to input in info. No results will show up until they do. Last one I got took about 7 months.

CWTs are typically 6 digits. Using the last six digits of the code 042473 I'm getting a summer coho from Burnett Inlet in AK that was released in 2011. I'm guessing you did not catch a 8 salt coho so I can see the issue. I looked it up on the RMIS database which can be accessed at www.rmpc.org. no idea what can be going wrong but all of the 04247X codes appear to be from SE AK in 2011 so I'm stumped.

Is this the initial code when you turned the snout in after fishing or were you just given this information?

RB,

No real chance for you to figure out the fish's origin yourself. Unfortunately you only have a number for the form for a CWT recovery from the sampler and not the tag itself.

The sampler most likely took the nose of your fish and put a tag with "042473" on the nose of your fish and handed you a corresponding tag number or emailed it to you. In the nose of your fish is the CWT these are maybe the .2 inches in length and 5 mm wide. This tag will be dug out in a lab and read. The number will have an upside down triangle followed by a series of numbers so they know where to read the tag from. After that they will have your tag number.

Currently WDFW has about a 1 year backlog for tags to be read.

Here is the card the checker gave us, it was a small king during the Area 9 opener. The checker let us take pictures then chopped the nose off for the tag.

Thanks for the feedback! :)

I was wondering if they were really backed up that is why I waited till January to see if I could see. The kids wanted to look the day we got home hahaha

I almost forgot about it but found the tag when I was switching my pocket calendar.

Thanks for the feedback
